The calculation, step by step.
It's not marketing, it's maths. We multiply pages/month × 12 to annualise, divide by your cartridge's ISO yield to work out how many cartridges you need, and compare OEM cost against compatible cost at the savings percentage you choose.
1 · Annualize volume
Pages/month × 12 = pages/year. If you print 500 a month, that's 6,000 a year.
2 · Calculate cartridges/year
Pages/year ÷ ISO yield. 6,000 pages ÷ 3,000 pages/cartridge = 2 cartridges/year.
3 · Multiply by price
Cartridges/year × price = annual cost. Same maths for OEM and for Star Toner.
4 · Calculate savings
OEM cost − Star Toner cost = your savings. Projection to 1 month, 1 year or 3 years with a tap.
The ISO standards we use: ISO/IEC 19752 (mono toner yield, 5% coverage), ISO/IEC 19798 (colour toner, 5% coverage per colour), ISO/IEC 24711 (inkjet ink cartridges). If your cartridge declares its yield under another standard, adjust the number in the "Yield" field.

Where does the savings percentage come from?
From real catalogue prices in May 2026. 40% is the conservative scenario (premium brand cartridges with a slim compatible margin). 50% is the catalogue average. 60-70% applies to bestsellers like HP CF280A or HP 415A where the OEM-compatible gap is widest.
Why do I need the cartridge's ISO yield?
Because without it there's no way to work out how many cartridges you need per year. The ISO yield is printed on the original cartridge box (something like "approximate yield: 3,000 pages per ISO/IEC 19752"). If you can't find it, typical ranges are: 1,000-3,000 pages (small cartridges), 3,000-6,000 pages (standard), 6,000-15,000 pages (XL/copiers).
Does compatible quality match OEM?
For document printing, yes. ISO 9001 + ISO 19752/19798 certified compatibles have been validated by OCU, Stiftung Warentest and Que Choisir in independent tests — the visual difference is indistinguishable in 99% of cases. Only in professional photo printing with special pigments (HP Vivera, Canon Lucia) might OEM be preferable.

Do I lose my printer warranty if I use compatibles?
No. Directive (EU) 2015/2436 and consolidated European case law establish that the printer manufacturer cannot void the official warranty for using certified compatible consumables. More detail on our transparency page.
