Brother TN-247/TN-243 toner reset (L3210, L3550, L3770)

If you've changed the toner and your Brother still shows "Replace Toner", it's because the internal counter wasn't set to zero. The printer doesn't measure how much powder is left inside: it counts pages. Until that counter is reset, it will keep warning you even if the cartridge is full. Here's how to fix it, step by step.

First things first: in most cases you don't have to do anything

Why does the printer keep asking for toner after I changed it?

Brother laser printers estimate the level by counting pages and reading the chip, not by measuring the actual toner. If the machine doesn't process the change or doesn't read a valid chip, it keeps the last saved status and repeats the warning. With a new compatible chip the problem usually sorts itself out. When it doesn't, you have to force the reset by hand.

How do you install the TN-247/TN-243 toner step by step?

The installation is identical across the whole L3210–L3770 colour range. Take your time and you'll have it done in two minutes:

• Switch the printer off and open the front cover.
• Pull out the complete drum + toner assembly (it comes out as a single piece).
• Push down the green locking lever and separate the old toner from the drum.
• Unbox the new one, remove the seal and gently rock it from side to side to distribute the powder.
• Fit the new toner into the drum until you hear a firm click.
• Slide the assembly back into its rail and close the front cover.

And if it still says "Replace Toner"? Manual reset

If, after the change, the machine keeps insisting on "Replace Toner" or "Replace the Toner", it's time to reset the counter by hand. Let's be honest: the exact sequence varies by model, and we're not going to give you one specific combination as if it were universal, because every firmware version changes the details.

The general method for this Brother family depends on the type of panel:

• Models with a touchscreen (DCP-L3550CDW, MFC-L3730CDN, MFC-L3770CDW): the reset is done from a service menu on the panel itself. With the machine switched on and the cover closed, you access the option to reset the toner for the relevant colour and confirm.
• Models without a touchscreen (HL-L3210CW, HL-L3230CDW, HL-L3270CDW): the reset is done with the front cover open and a specific combination of buttons on the panel. Is it the toner or the drum? Don't mix them up

Brother separates two consumables with two different warnings. If the message mentions toner, it's the colour cartridge (TN-247/TN-243). If it says "Replace Drum" or "Drum End of Life", then the one to change is the imaging unit, not the toner.
