The toner: TN-247 / TN-243 colour

The cartridge you're after is the Brother TN247 TN243 compatible colour toner · ISO 9001. It yields 3,000 ISO pages and costs €10.98 (VAT included). That works out to 0.37 cents per page (10.98 ÷ 3,000), a cost per copy that's very hard to match with an original cartridge.

Bear in mind this is a colour printer: each shade (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) is a separate cartridge, so you can replace just the colour that runs out without swapping all four. Toner and drum: what each one is and how often to change them

This is the most common mix-up with these Brothers, so let's be clear. The toner is the coloured powder that fuses onto the paper; it's used up with every print and runs out at around 3,000 pages. The drum (or imaging unit) is the cylinder that picks up that powder and transfers it to the paper; it doesn't run out of ink, it wears out with use and lasts roughly 18,000 pages — that's about 6 toner refills.

In this colour laser range the drum is separate from the toner; they don't come together. The replacement is the Brother DR243 DR247 compatible drum · 18,000 pages, at €14.98. Spread across its 18,000 pages that's just 0.08 cents/page. Adding toner + drum together, the combined cost per colour comes to around 0.45 cents per page. Installation tip and counter reset

Changing it takes a minute: open the front cover, pull out the toner-drum assembly, separate the old toner, click the new one into place, rock it gently side to side to spread the powder and refit it. If your Brother still shows "toner empty" after the swap, it's almost always the counter, not the cartridge: you reset it from the panel. Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the TN-247 and the TN-243?

The TN-243 is the standard reference and the TN-247 is the high-capacity one; both work in the same printers. Our cartridge is equivalent to the high-capacity version and is approved to replace either of them, with a yield of 3,000 ISO pages. You buy one and cover both references without any hassle.

When do I change the drum and not the toner?

The printer warns you with different messages: one for the toner (roughly every 3,000 pages per colour) and another for the drum (roughly every 18,000 pages). Does using compatible toner void my Brother's warranty?

No. In Spain your machine's warranty stays valid even if you use compatible consumables; the manufacturer can't force you to buy theirs. How much do I save versus the original?

Quite a lot. The toner works out at 0.37 cents/page and the drum at 0.08 cents, against a branded original that usually costs 3 to 5 times more. In an office printing every day, that saving adds up every month without giving up print quality.

Why does it still show empty after fitting the new toner?

It's almost never a cartridge fault, but the printer's counter, which hasn't been reset to zero. Check that you removed the protective seal, that the toner clicked into place and, if it persists, reset the counter from the panel following our Brother reset guide. In seconds it's printing normally again.
