Why do some Canons take 2 black cartridges (PGI-570 BK + CLI-571 BK)?

Canon PIXMA TS and MG models with 5 cartridges use two different blacks: PGI-570 PGBK (pigment black, for text on plain paper, opaque, pigment-based ink) and CLI-571 BK (dye black, for photos, deeper, dye-based ink). They are NOT interchangeable, pigment is for text, dye is for photos. Both compatibles are available.

Does using compatible ink void my Canon PIXMA warranty?

No. Under Directive (EU) 2019/771 and the Consumer Rights Act 2015, you have the right to use third-party consumables without losing your statutory warranty. Canon could only invalidate the warranty by proving physical damage to the device, which does not happen with ISO 9001 certified compatibles.

What if my PIXMA does not recognise the compatible cartridge chip?

Some recent Canon models (especially TS series) may show "non-Canon cartridge". This is informational, the printer keeps working. To dismiss it: (1) Power off and back on. (2) Accept the on-screen message. (3) Some Canons need you to hold the Stop/Reset button for 5 seconds to confirm the non-original cartridge. Certified compatibles with a fresh chip are recognised automatically.

What is the difference between compatible PG-540 and PG-540XL?

PG-540 is standard (~180 BK pages at 5%) and PG-540XL is high yield (~600 BK pages, almost 4x more). Both fit PIXMA MG2550 and TS3450. Same logic for CL-541/CL-541XL and PG-545/PG-545XL.

Will compatible Canon cartridges work in my PIXMA without losing the warranty?

Using compatible cartridges does not void your Canon printer warranty: the European directive and the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU protect the consumer against clauses that force you to use single-brand consumables. If a Canon technician tells you otherwise, ask them to put the actual cause of the failure in writing.

What is the difference between PG-540 and PG-545 in my PIXMA?

They are physically different cartridges and not interchangeable. PG-540 (black) and CL-541 (colour) fit the MG2150, MG3550, MX475 family and similar, while PG-545 and CL-546 fit TS3150, TS3450, TR4550 and MG2550S. Always check the label on the cartridge you took out before ordering the replacement.

How many pages does a compatible Canon cartridge print?

It depends on the reference and on coverage. Under ISO/IEC 24711, a PG-540 XL is around 600 black pages at 5% coverage, a CLI-571 XL colour around 715 pages. Each product page shows the declared yield so you can compare with the OEM and work out your real cost per page.
