How to fix a paper jam (and prevent it from happening again)

Summary: To resolve a paper jam, turn off the printer, remove the paper with both hands and in the direction of travel, without pulling, and check that no pieces are left inside. If the jam error persists even if you don't see paper, it is usually a dirty sensor or a tiny leftover piece hidden. This guide covers step-by-step extraction, the "ghost jam," real causes, and how to prevent it from happening again.

A paper jam is the most classic breakdown of any printer and, almost always, the most harmless: if resolved well, it leaves no consequences. The damage is caused by haste — pulling with force, leaving a piece inside — not the jam itself. Do it methodically.

How to remove jammed paper step-by-step

  1. Turn off the printer and disconnect it from the power. Avoid starting the mechanism while you have your hands inside and protect the components.
  2. Open all lids and trays. Remove the input tray, open the front and back lids. In a laser printer, also remove the toner cartridge to see the paper path.
  3. Locate the jammed paper and, above all, identify which direction it was moving.
  4. Pull with both hands, slowly and in the paper's direction of travel. Never backwards and never with a jerk: the paper will tear and leave pieces behind.
  5. Check that no fragments are left. A piece the size of a fingernail is enough for the jam to happen again. Look at the rollers and slots with a flashlight.
  6. Check if any object has fallen: a paper clip, a staple, a loose label. Remove it without sharp tools.
  7. Close everything, reconnect, and turn on. The printer will perform a check cycle. Print a page to confirm.
What you should never do

Do not pull the paper with just one hand or abruptly. Do not use tweezers, scissors, or screwdrivers inside the printer. Do not pull the paper backwards "to undo the path": the path has parts that only rotate in one direction. And do not force the toner cartridge: leave it aside on a piece of paper, without touching the drum.

The jam error persists even if there is no paper

This is the most confusing case: the printer insists on "paper jam" but you see nothing. It is called a ghost jam and it has three common causes:

  • A tiny piece hidden between the rollers or stuck to a sensor. Check the entire path with a flashlight.
  • A dirty or dusty paper sensor. Optical sensors detect the passage of paper; if they are covered in paper dust, they "see" a jam that does not exist. Clean them with compressed air or a dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Dirty or slippery feed rollers. They do not grip the sheet well, and the paper gets stuck halfway. Clean them with a slightly damp cloth.

If after checking everything the error remains, turn off the printer for two minutes and turn it back on: sometimes the sensor gets stuck in an error state that only clears with a full restart.

Why does paper get jammed

Knowing the cause prevents repetition. The most frequent ones:

Cause Solution
Damp or wrinkled paper Store paper in a dry place, inside its packaging; paper absorbs moisture and sticks.
Overloaded tray Do not exceed the tray's maximum load mark.
Misaligned sheets Fan the stack of paper and adjust the side guides to its exact width.
Incorrect paper weight Use the weight supported by your printer (usually 70-90 g/m² for standard folio).
Worn rollers In heavily used printers, the rollers lose grip; they can be replaced.

Notes by brand

The procedure is almost universal, but it is useful to know where each brand looks:

  • HP. It usually indicates the jam zone on its screen and in the HP Smart app. Check the rear door and the duplex area especially.
  • Epson. On EcoTank models, check the rear cover; the panel guides the extraction step-by-step.
  • Canon. It indicates the error code on the screen; most jams are resolved through the rear lid.
  • Brother. On laser printers, remove the entire drum and toner unit to access the path; it is the area where pieces accumulate the most.

How to avoid future jams

  • Use quality, dry paper without creases.
  • Fan the stack before loading it and adjust the guides to its width.
  • Do not mix papers of different thicknesses in the same tray.
  • Do not refill the tray above its maximum mark.
  • Clean the feed rollers every so often if you print a lot.

A poorly resolved jam can end up affecting print quality. If after a jam the printer prints stripes, consult my printer prints with stripes; and if it simply doesn't respond, the printer does not print even though it has ink. To replenish consumables, here you have certified compatible ink and toner.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove jammed paper from the printer?

Turn off and disconnect the printer, open all lids and trays, locate the paper, and pull it with both hands, slowly and in the direction of travel, never with a jerk or backwards. Check that no pieces are left inside and close everything before turning it back on.

The printer says "paper jam" but there is no paper, what do I do?

It is a ghost jam. Common causes: a tiny piece hidden between the rollers, a paper sensor covered in dust, or dirty feed rollers. Check the path with a flashlight, clean the sensors with compressed air, and restart the printer for two minutes.

Why does paper jam constantly?

The most frequent causes are damp or wrinkled paper, an overloaded tray, poorly adjusted guides, incorrect paper weight, or worn feed rollers. Store paper dry, fan it before loading it, and do not exceed the maximum load mark.

The paper has torn and a piece is left inside

Turn off the printer and locate the piece with a flashlight. Remove it with both hands in the direction of travel; if you can't reach it, open the back lid or, in a laser printer, remove the toner cartridge for better access. Never use tweezers or sharp objects.

Can a paper jam damage the printer?

The jam itself rarely damages anything. The damage is caused by poor extraction: pulling with force, leaving pieces, or using sharp tools. Resolved calmly and methodically, it leaves no consequences.

Should the printer be turned off to clear a jam?

Yes, it is recommended. Turning it off and disconnecting it prevents the mechanism from starting while you have your hands inside and protects the components. Turn it on again only when you have closed all the lids.
