Which thermal paper does your printer need: 80 mm receipt rolls, 100×150 labels and compatibility (2026)
UpdatedShare
The thermal printer needs the right material for its mechanism: heat-sensitive paper in direct thermal or media and ribbon when using thermal transfer. Check width, roll diameter or label size in the manual. A standard format does not guarantee it will fit all equipment.
- No ink, toner or ribbon: the only consumable is the thermal paper that reacts to heat.
- Receipts/POS: 80 mm wide receipt rolls (models such as the KW-M806 and the KW-M804).
- Shipping and logistics: thermal labels, with 100×150 mm as the standard, in label printers that take up to 108 mm in width.
- In the EU, thermal paper containing BPA at 0.02% or more by weight may not be placed on the market after 2 January 2020 under Regulation (EU) 2016/2235. This does not require paper to be free of every phenol.
- Fit: a third-party roll may work if its width, outer diameter, core and media type meet the printer specifications; not every roll fits.
No ink, no toner: how direct thermal works
The big difference compared with a laser or inkjet printer is that here there's no cartridge to replace. Direct thermal generates the image by applying heat onto special paper coated with a heat-sensitive layer: wherever the printhead heats it, the paper darkens. That's why it uses no ink, no toner and no ribbon. The only consumable is the thermal paper, whether in rolls or in labels.
Direct thermal printing needs no replacement ink or toner cartridge. To compare costs, account for paper as well as the printer, electricity and maintenance. 80 mm rolls for receipts: what to check before buying
Current listings for the KW-M806 and KW-M804 receipt printers specify 80 mm paper. Check supported width, roll diameter and connections in the listing and manual before buying; compatibility with every POS application should not be assumed.
Even though the roll may look like a generic consumable, it's worth checking four parameters before buying so it fits well and doesn't leave any slack or cause jams:
- Width (mm): for these receipt models, 80 mm.
- Roll outer diameter: determines how many metres it holds and whether it physically fits in the compartment.
- Core diameter: the inner tube; it must fit onto the printer's spindle.
- Direction of the thermal side: the heat-sensitive side must face towards the printhead. If you load the roll the wrong way round, it prints nothing even though the machine works perfectly.
A quick trick to tell which is the thermal side: scratch the paper with your fingernail or a coin; the side that leaves a dark mark is the heat-sensitive one, and that's the side that goes towards the printhead.
100×150 thermal labels and other formats
Current listings for the KW-D464B and KW-430B label printers state a media width of up to 108 mm. The 100×150 mm format is common, but check label type, sensor and carrier requirements before choosing it.
When choosing labels, look at these three points:
- Size: 100×150 mm for shipping; there are others for prices, barcodes or internal logistics.
- Format: die-cut on a roll, continuous, with a black mark or fan-fold (accordion-folded). The format must match what your printer expects in order to cut and position correctly.
- Compatible width: it mustn't exceed the machine's maximum (remember, up to 108 mm on these label printers).
The current KW-430B listing names ZPL, EPL, DPL and TSPL; the KW-D464B listing describes Windows, Linux and Mac support and a mobile SDK. Confirm versions and settings with the seller or manual before integration. Related models: thermal printer collection
Direct thermal vs thermal transfer: don't confuse them
Direct thermal and thermal transfer use different supplies. Choose according to the printer, media and how long the label must remain readable.
- Direct thermal: needs no ribbon. It's the one in these models and the ideal choice for receipts, order tickets and e-commerce shipping, where the label does its job within days or weeks.
- Thermal transfer uses a ribbon on suitable media. It may be preferable where greater durability is needed, but lifespan depends on materials and use conditions.
Direct thermal labels can lose legibility through heat, light, abrasion or contact with certain materials. There is no fixed 60–120-day limit: paper, storage and use all matter. For codes that must remain readable longer, compare thermal-transfer media and their product specifications.
BPA in thermal paper: what the EU restricts
In the EU, Regulation (EU) 2016/2235 restricts placing thermal paper on the market if it contains BPA at 0.02% or more by weight after 2 January 2020. It does not require every paper to be “BPA-free” or “phenol-free”. Official text: EUR-Lex
Ask the supplier for the material specification and relevant BPA declaration before buying rolls or labels. A “phenol-free” claim needs its own evidence; it does not follow from the regulation. We cannot confirm the composition of every listed paper or an ISO 9001 certification for these rolls without verified documents. Related reading: 2026 printing trends
Compatibility, storage and guarantee
Third-party rolls may work when their dimensions and thermal side suit the printer. Check width, outer diameter, core, format and manufacturer guidance before buying; no generic roll is guaranteed to fit every model.
To stop the print from fading prematurely, look after the paper's storage:
- Keep the rolls in a cool, dry place.
- Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight.
- Avoid contact with solvents and with plasticisers (PVC): PVC sleeves, folders or tapes can erase the thermal print.
Heat, light and contact with some materials can speed up receipt fading; avoid leaving a ticket in a hot glovebox. Check current order information for delivery times, sales terms and warranty. Frequently asked questions
Do thermal printers need ink or toner?
Direct thermal printers do not need ink or toner because they use heat to print on special heat-sensitive paper. As a next step, always verify that you are using thermal paper rolls compatible with your equipment dimensions to ensure optimal operation and prevent unnecessary jams in the internal mechanism.
What roll width do I need for a receipt printer?
The most common roll width for a standard receipt printer is eighty millimeters, although other formats are available according to your needs. We recommend checking the technical specifications of your device to verify the maximum roll diameter and core size supported by the manufacturer.
Which label do I use for e-commerce shipping?
The most common label size for e-commerce shipping usually measures one hundred by one hundred fifty millimeters. Before making your purchase, check your device manual for the maximum supported print width to ensure that the chosen format fits your specific printer perfectly.
Direct thermal or thermal transfer?
Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive paper and no ribbon; thermal transfer uses a ribbon and suitable media. The first may suit short-lived receipts. If labels or barcodes must remain legible longer, compare media specifications and exposure conditions. Neither method alone guarantees a fixed service life for every print.
Will any thermal paper roll do?
No, not every thermal paper roll will fit. Check width, outer diameter, core, heat-sensitive side and format against your printer manual. In the EU, Regulation (EU) 2016/2235 restricts thermal paper containing BPA at 0.02% or more by weight; it does not require paper to be free of every phenol.
Why does a thermal receipt fade?
A thermal receipt can fade within months when exposed to light or heat; stored in the dark, it can last much longer. Its actual readability depends on the paper, coating and handling conditions. Keep it away from sunlight, heat, abrasion and certain plastics; follow the media maker’s guidance and save a digital copy when retention matters.
