Note on the Brother HL-L9310CDW: it uses TN-910 toner, not TN-423. The DR-421CL drum is a separate part; we do not currently sell a verified compatible TN-910 toner. See its model page.

The letters tell you what each machine does: HL is printer only, DCP adds copier and scanner (no fax) and MFC is a complete all-in-one with fax. The final CDW letters are common to all models: C for colour, D for automatic duplex (it prints double-sided on its own) and W for wifi. The consumable you need and what it yields

This Brother system separates the toner (the coloured powder that is used up with each print) from the drum (the imaging unit that transfers that toner to the paper). They're two different parts and are replaced at different times, so it's worth being clear on both references.

The compatible TN423/TN433 colour toner yields 6,500 pages measured to the ISO/IEC 19798 standard, the international yield standard for colour toner. It's the high-capacity reference, designed so you change the cartridge fewer times and lower the cost per page.

The compatible DR-421CL drum has a much longer life: about 50,000 pages. In other words, a single drum accompanies you through several sets of toner before needing replacement; the printer itself warns you when it's time to replace it. How many pages does it print?

The DR-421CL drum lasts around 50,000 pages, so it covers several toner changes before running out. Where a product page states a page yield, check its declared test protocol: ISO/IEC 19798.
