What exactly is a compatible cartridge?

It's worth being clear about the three types circulating on the market, because they get confused every day:

• Original (OEM): made by your printer's own brand (HP, Brother, Canon…). Maximum guaranteed compatibility, and also the highest price.
• Remanufactured: a used original shell is collected, cleaned, the worn parts are replaced and it's refilled. It reuses material, so its quality depends heavily on who processes it.
• Compatible: a brand-new cartridge made by a third party, designed to fit and perform like the original. It doesn't reuse used shells. If the manufacturer holds ISO 9001 certification, every batch passes performance and density checks.

In other words: compatible doesn't mean "second-hand". It's a new product. What changes compared with the original is who makes it and, above all, the price.

What does ISO 9001 certification mean?

ISO 9001 is an international quality management standard. It doesn't measure a single cartridge: it certifies that the factory works with controlled, repeatable and audited processes. In practice, it means that cartridge number 500 comes out the same as number 1, with the same amount of toner and the same leak control.

False, and it's also illegal for them to impose it on you. In the European Union, a manufacturer cannot void your printer's warranty just for using another brand's consumables. It could only decline to cover damage if it proves that a specific consumable caused it, something that doesn't happen with an ISO 9001 product.

A legitimate compatible is sold under its own brand, without hiding that it comes from a third party.

• Counterfeit: passes itself off as the original brand, suspiciously low price, no clear details and no backing.
