Compatible Epson 103 ink for EcoTank: installation, reset and savings

Updated

Compatible Epson 103 ink is a consumable designed for EcoTank refillable reservoir systems. Unlike a traditional cartridge, here you don't swap out a part with a printhead: you refill the printer's ink tank from a bottle. This article explains which models it fits, how to install it correctly and what to expect in terms of performance.

What it is and which printers it fits

The 103 series is the ink-bottle reference that Epson uses in several of its entry-level EcoTank machines. It is compatible with exactly the following models:

  • Epson EcoTank L1110
  • Epson EcoTank L3110
  • Epson EcoTank L3150
  • Epson EcoTank L3151
  • Epson EcoTank L3160
  • Epson EcoTank L5190

If your machine doesn't appear in this list, don't use this reference: each EcoTank series uses a different ink. Other models use compatible Epson 104 ink, compatible Epson 102 ink or compatible Epson 106 ink.

How to install it and what to do if it "doesn't recognise" the ink

Refilling an EcoTank is straightforward as long as you respect the order and, above all, the colour of each reservoir:

  • Open the tank cover and locate the reservoir for the colour you're going to refill.
  • Uncap the bottle, fit it into the nozzle of the corresponding tank and let the ink flow by gravity up to the maximum-level mark. Don't force or squeeze the bottle.
  • Remove the bottle, close the tank cap and lower the cover.
  • If it's the first fill, run the initial ink charge from the panel or the software; then carry out a nozzle check.

EcoTank systems don't have a chip per cartridge like conventional cartridges: the level is estimated by software. That's why, after refilling, the printer may still show the reservoir as "empty" or ask you to confirm the fill. This is normal: go into the maintenance menu or the refill assistant and manually confirm that you've topped up that colour to reset the counter to zero. If lines appear or a colour is missing after refilling, run a printhead cleaning and print a CMYK test page to check that all four colours come out clean.

Performance and savings versus the original

The bottle format is, in itself, the key to the savings: a single bottle refills the reservoir many times over what a traditional cartridge yields, at a very low cost per page. Our compatible ink keeps that logic and adds a purchase price lower than the branded bottle, without changing the way your EcoTank works.

On quality, an ink manufactured under ISO 9001 aims for a density and drying behaviour equivalent to the original for office use and colour documents. If you want to understand where the real savings come from and how it compares page by page, we have two useful reads: original vs compatible, side by side and the real cost of printing.

Why buy it from Star Toner

Your Startoner consumable is covered by a three-year legal conformity guarantee. Printer coverage is governed by the manufacturer’s terms and may exclude damage caused by consumables. Using a compatible cartridge does not by itself establish the cause of a fault; keep your documentation and contact us if a problem occurs.

Frequently asked questions

Does compatible Epson 103 ink work with my EcoTank L3150?

Yes. This reference is compatible with the EcoTank L1110, L3110, L3150, L3151, L3160 and L5190. If your model isn't on that list, you need a different ink series (102, 104 or 106).

After refilling, the printer still shows the reservoir as empty. What do I do?

EcoTanks estimate the level by software, not by chip. Go into the maintenance menu or the refill assistant and manually confirm that you've topped up that colour to reset the level counter.

3-year Startoner consumable warranty

No. Spanish law protects your right to use compatible consumables without losing the machine's warranty. You can find the details in our guide to the legal warranty for compatible cartridges.

How do I check that all four colours come out correctly after refilling?

Run a nozzle check and, if necessary, a printhead cleaning. Then print a CMYK test page to verify that black, cyan, magenta and yellow come out without lines or gaps.
