Brother HL-L2400DW | Review and opinions (2026)

In short: the Brother HL-L2400DW is a 2024 machine and the newest mono laser we supply. 30 ppm, automatic duplex and a cost per page of 0.60 cents. It is fast for what it costs. And yes, it takes compatible toner — including the «E» version, which is where a lot of people get confused.

The short verdict

  • Buy it if you print black-and-white documents up to around 2,500 pages a month and you want speed and duplex without overpaying.
  • Don't buy it if you need colour or a scanner: there is neither here.
  • About the «E» version (HL-L2400DWE): it is the same machine. It is not locked. We explain it below, because it gets confused with the HP case all the time.

Thirty pages per minute and automatic duplex at 15 sides per minute in a 7 kg machine is a good ratio. For comparison: the HP LaserJet M209dw does 29 ppm and 18 ipm in duplex, with a somewhat lower recommended volume.

The figure nobody talks about: power draw

43 W on standby is not nothing. A printer left on all working day in standby uses considerably more than people assume. Deep sleep drops to 0.6 W, so it is worth checking the timer in the menu if it is going to sit idle for hours.

The «E» version: something needs clearing up here

Brother sells the HL-L2400DW and the HL-L2400DWE. As with HP and its «e» models, many people assume the letter means a consumables lock. With Brother, that is not the case.

We compared Brother's two official datasheets and they are identical in everything that matters: 30 ppm, duplex at 15 sides/min, 2,500 pages recommended volume, 7.10 kg and the same consumables (TN-2510, TN-2510XL, DR-2510). What is more, both datasheets say exactly the same thing: «compatible with Brother's EcoPro toner subscription».

In other words: the «E» refers to the EcoPro subscription programme, not to a permanent lock burned into the machine. That is an important difference from the HP+ case, where HP does state in its documentation that the machine requires original toner «for the life of the printer» and irreversibly so. An honest caveat: if you sign up for an EcoPro subscription, the service comes with Brother toner — it is a consumables service, and that makes perfect sense. What matters is that the machine itself is not rendered unusable for compatible toner because it has an «E» in its name.

Real cost per page

Combined cost: around 0.71 cents per page adding the toner and the drum's pro-rata share. For a mono laser with duplex, that is a very competitive figure.

A note on our declared yield: Brother states 3,000 pages for the original TN-2510XL. We declare 2,500 for our compatible. We prefer to publish the figure we can stand behind rather than copy the manufacturer's — and even with the conservative figure, the cost per page still works out at 0.60 cents.

The toner in the box yields 700 pages: it is a starter. The TN-2510XL yields more than three times that.

Which toner and drum it needs

Remember that on Brother machines the toner and the drum are separate parts. The drum lasts about six toner refills. It is one of the reasons the cost per page on these machines is so low: you are not throwing the drum away every time.
