HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw | Review and opinions (2026)

In short: the HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw does not use cartridges. You refill it with a toner kit, and that changes the arithmetic completely: 0.14 cents per page. It is between eight and fourteen times cheaper to run than a normal cartridge laser. If you print a lot in black and white, this is the review that matters.

The short verdict

• Buy it if you print steadily — between 250 and 2,500 pages a month — and you want the lowest possible cost per page in mono.
• Don't buy it if you print little: the purchase price is higher and it will take years to pay back. At 100 pages a month, an M110w makes more sense.
• Don't buy it if you need colour or a scanner.

The difference: refill, not cartridge

On a normal laser, every time the toner runs out you throw away an entire cartridge — plastic shell, gears and chip included. On the LaserJet Tank you throw away a refill kit: you tip the toner into the printer's tank and that is that. HP advertises a 15-second refill and packaging with over 75% less plastic.

The direct consequence: you pay for toner, not for disposable engineering. That is why the cost per page collapses.

The drum is separate and long-lasting — HP declares up to 50,000 pages. And the printer comes preloaded with toner for about 5,000 pages, not with a laughable 300-page starter cartridge.

22 ppm is a little slower than an M209dw (29 ppm) or a Brother HL-L2400DW (30 ppm). That is the toll the tank system charges. In exchange, the recommended volume rises to 2,500 pages a month and the maximum cycle to 25,000.

The Tank is eight times cheaper per page than an M209dw. At 2,000 pages a month, the difference against the M209dw is about €236 a year in toner alone. That is the calculation that decides the purchase, and it is why the higher up-front price pays back quickly if you really do print.

A note on our figures: HP declares 2,500 pages for the original 153A kit. We declare 2,300 for our compatible — the conservative figure, and the one we can stand behind. The 153X, at 5,000 pages, matches HP's figure.

Unless you print very little, the 153X is almost always the right buy: it costs €1.49 more and yields more than double.
