HP LaserJet M110w vs M110we | Review and opinions (2026)

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

In short: the HP LaserJet M110w and the M110we are, inside, the same printer. Same speed, same toner, same engine. The only difference is one letter — and that letter decides whether you'll be able to use compatible toner for the next five years or stay tied to HP forever. This is the review we wish we'd read before buying.

Quick verdict

  • Buy the M110w. It's a tiny, honest mono laser that's cheap to run, for anyone printing between 100 and 1,000 pages a month.
  • Don't buy the M110we if you ever plan to use compatible toner. It's an HP+ printer and stays locked to genuine HP toner for life.
  • Don't buy either if you need automatic double-sided printing: there is no duplex. No colour. No scanner.

The difference is one letter

This isn't our opinion. It's what HP says in the official datasheet for the M110we, word for word:

«This is an HP+ printer. It requires an HP account, an internet connection and the exclusive use of Original HP toner cartridges for the life of the printer.»

— HP, LaserJet M110we datasheet

And now the figure that says everything. We compared HP's two official datasheets:

M110w M110we
Speed (A4) Up to 20 ppm Up to 20 ppm
First page out From 8.5 s From 8.5 s
Duty cycle Up to 8,000 pages/month Up to 8,000 pages/month
Recommended volume 100–1,000 pages/month 100–1,000 pages/month
Toner HP 142A (W1420A) HP 142A (W1420A)
Duplex No No
Mentions of HP+ in the datasheet 0 13

Same hardware. Same cartridge. Same speed. The entire product difference is a software lock that HP mentions thirteen times in one document and zero times in the other.

What HP+ means in practice

HP confirms it in its FAQ as well:

«HP+ printers require the use of Original HP Ink to function, even after the HP Instant Ink service trial period expires.»

— HP, HP+ frequently asked questions

Three consequences worth understanding before you pay:

  1. It's irreversible. HP states that, once activated, HP+ «is embedded in the device». There is no menu to switch it off.
  2. It needs internet and an HP account. A printer that demands a connection in order to print is a design decision, not a fault.
  3. The real cost is paid later. The purchase price of an «e» is usually slightly lower. What you save at the till you pay back on every cartridge, for the life of the machine.

Why we're the ones telling you

Let's be transparent: we sell compatible toner. You buying a locked printer is bad for our business. But it's also why we know this detail: customers come to us having bought a compatible HP 142A, fitted it, and had the printer reject it. It isn't a faulty cartridge. It's an M110we.

Most reviews of this printer lump the two models under a single headline — «M110we and M110w» — as if they were the same purchase. For almost everything else, they are. For the one thing that matters long-term, they aren't.

Real cost per page

Yields declared by HP under ISO/IEC 19752. Prices ours. Valid for the M110w; on an M110we you can't use any of these.

Cartridge Price Yield Cost per page
HP 142A (W1420A) compatible €13.98 950 pages 1.47 cents
HP 142XL compatible €17.98 2,200 pages 0.82 cents

The 142XL costs €4 more and yields more than twice as much: it cuts cost per page by 44%. One detail worth knowing: the toner in the box yields about 300 pages. It's a starter cartridge, not a full one — it'll last roughly six weeks of normal use.

Honest specs for the M110w

Speed Up to 20 ppm (A4)
First page out From 8.5 s
Duplex No (manual)
Processor 500 MHz
Connectivity USB 2.0 + Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n 2.4 GHz only
Maximum duty cycle Up to 8,000 pages/month
Recommended volume 100–1,000 pages/month
Starter toner ~300 pages

No duplex, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. If your router is congested on that band, you'll notice. This is a printer designed for a desk, not for an office.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the HP M110w and the M110we?

The hardware is identical: 20 ppm, an 8,000-page duty cycle, the same HP 142A toner. The M110we is an HP+ printer, which means it requires an HP account, an internet connection and genuine HP toner for the life of the machine. The M110w has no such restriction.

Can I use compatible toner in the HP LaserJet M110w?

Yes, in the M110w without the trailing «e». Not in the M110we: HP blocks non-genuine cartridges.

Can the HP+ lock be removed from an M110we?

No. According to HP's documentation, once activated, HP+ is embedded in the device and permanently requires genuine supplies.

Does the HP M110w print double-sided automatically?

No. Manual duplex only: you have to turn the paper over by hand.

How many pages does the toner supplied with the printer yield?

About 300 pages. It's a starter cartridge, not a full one.
