Compatible HP 920XL cartridge: installation, chip reset and savings | Star Toner

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

The compatible HP 920XL ink cartridge is a high-capacity consumable (the XL version) manufactured to the ISO 9001 standard as an alternative to the original HP 920XL. It reproduces the same format, contacts and chip as the factory cartridge, so it fits and works in your printer with no adapters or modifications.

What it is and which printers it works with

It is a cartridge designed for home and office use with medium and high volumes. As the XL variant, it offers greater capacity than the standard cartridge, which reduces how often you need to replace it. It is compatible with these models:

  • HP OfficeJet 6000
  • HP OfficeJet 6000 Wireless
  • HP OfficeJet 6500
  • HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless
  • HP OfficeJet 6500A
  • HP OfficeJet 6500A Plus
  • HP OfficeJet 7000
  • HP OfficeJet 7500A

If your machine does not appear in the list, check the exact model number before buying: the 920/920XL series is specific to these OfficeJet printers.

How to install it and what to do if the "cartridge is not recognised"

Installation is identical to that of an original cartridge:

  • Switch the printer on and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the old cartridge and take the new one out of its packaging.
  • Remove the protective plastic strip covering the contacts and the ink outlet. Do not touch the chip or the nozzles with your fingers.
  • Insert the cartridge into its colour-coded slot until you hear a click, then close the door.

If you see a "cartridge not recognised" or "incompatible" message, try these steps in order:

  • Remove the cartridge, gently clean the gold contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth and put it back in.
  • Switch the printer off using the button, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on to force a fresh reading of the chip.
  • If the message persists with a particular cartridge, take that cartridge out and try again: sometimes the reset completes after reinserting it twice.

Bear in mind that HP releases firmware updates that can reject non-original consumables. We explain how to manage this in our article on HP firmware and cartridge blocking.

Performance and savings compared with the original

The XL version is aimed at anyone who prints regularly and wants to reduce their cost per page. Print quality on everyday documents and graphics is equivalent to that of an original cartridge in these printers, and ISO 9001 quality control aims to minimise leaks and recognition errors.

The savings compared with the branded consumable are significant: for the price of one original you can buy several compatible units. Frequently asked questions

Will the compatible HP 920XL cartridge work with my HP OfficeJet 6500?

Yes. It is compatible with the OfficeJet 6000, 6000 Wireless, 6500, 6500 Wireless, 6500A, 6500A Plus, 7000 and 7500A. Check the exact model number of your machine before buying.

My printer says "cartridge not recognised" — what do I do?

Remove the cartridge, clean the contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth and reinsert it. Switch the printer off for 30 seconds and back on to force the chip to be read. If it persists, reinsert the affected cartridge a couple of times.

Is it legal to use a compatible cartridge, and do I lose the printer's warranty?

It is entirely legal and does not void the printer manufacturer's warranty. You can find out more in our guide on the legal warranty for compatible cartridges in Spain.

What is the difference between the 920 version and the 920XL?

The XL version is high-capacity: it yields more pages than the standard cartridge, so it reduces the cost per page and how often you need to replace it. It is the recommended option if you print regularly.
