Compatible HP 920XL cartridge: installation, chip reset and savings | Star Toner

Updated

It reproduces the same format, contacts and chip as the factory cartridge, so it fits and works in your printer with no adapters or modifications.

What it is and which printers it works with

It is a cartridge designed for home and office use with medium and high volumes. As the XL variant, it offers greater capacity than the standard cartridge, which reduces how often you need to replace it. It is compatible with these models:

  • HP OfficeJet 6000
  • HP OfficeJet 6000 Wireless
  • HP OfficeJet 6500
  • HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless
  • HP OfficeJet 6500A
  • HP OfficeJet 6500A Plus
  • HP OfficeJet 7000
  • HP OfficeJet 7500A

If your machine does not appear in the list, check the exact model number before buying: the 920/920XL series is specific to these OfficeJet printers.

How to install it and what to do if the "cartridge is not recognised"

Browse the available products and check compatibility, declared yield and price on each product page.

  • Switch the printer on and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the old cartridge and take the new one out of its packaging.
  • Remove the protective plastic strip covering the contacts and the ink outlet. Do not touch the chip or the nozzles with your fingers.
  • Insert the cartridge into its colour-coded slot until you hear a click, then close the door.

If you see a "cartridge not recognised" or "incompatible" message, try these steps in order:

  • Remove the cartridge, gently clean the gold contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth and put it back in.
  • Switch the printer off using the button, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on to force a fresh reading of the chip.
  • If the message persists with a particular cartridge, take that cartridge out and try again: sometimes the reset completes after reinserting it twice.

Bear in mind that HP releases firmware updates that can reject non-original consumables. We explain how to manage this in our article on HP firmware and cartridge blocking.

Performance and savings compared with the original

The XL version is aimed at anyone who prints regularly and wants to reduce their cost per page.

The savings compared with the branded consumable are significant: for the price of one original you can buy several compatible units.
