Compatible Epson 29XL ink cartridge: installation guide, compatibility and savings
UpdatedShare
Here we explain which printers it works with, how to install it, what to do if your machine doesn't recognise it and how much you can save compared with the original.
What it is and which printers it works with
The Epson 29XL is the high-capacity version of the series 29, the ink range Epson designed for its Expression Home XP line of home multifunction printers. The XL variant holds more ink than the standard cartridge, so it prints more pages before running out.
This compatible cartridge works in the following models:
- Expression Home XP-235, XP-245, XP-247, XP-255 and XP-257
- Expression Home XP-332, XP-335, XP-342, XP-345, XP-352 and XP-355
- Expression Home XP-432, XP-435, XP-442, XP-445, XP-452 and XP-455
If your printer is one of these, this is your cartridge. Before buying, check the exact model on the label on the front or underside of the machine.
How to install it and what to do if the cartridge isn't recognised
Browse the available products and check compatibility, declared yield and price on each product page.
- Switch on the printer and open the cover; the carriage will move to the replacement position.
- Press the tab on the used cartridge and remove it.
- Take the new cartridge out of the packaging and remove only the yellow protective strip. Do not touch the gold chip or the ink outlet.
- Insert it into its colour-coded slot until you hear a click and close the cover.
If the cartridge not recognised message appears, don't worry: it's almost always a temporary chip-reading fault, not a product defect. Try these steps:
- Switch off the printer, remove the cartridge, gently clean the gold chip contacts with a dry cloth and put it back in.
- Reinstall it, making sure it clicks and is properly seated.
- If it persists, remove the cartridge for a few seconds and reinsert it to force a fresh chip reading (reset).
- Your Startoner consumable is covered by a three-year legal conformity guarantee. Printer coverage is governed by the manufacturer’s terms and may exclude damage caused by consumables. Using a compatible cartridge does not by itself establish the cause of a fault; keep your documentation and contact us if a problem occurs.
Yield and savings compared with the original
As this is the XL version, this cartridge is designed for anyone who prints fairly often and doesn't want to be replacing the cartridge every five minutes.
The difference is in the price: compatible ink significantly reduces the cost per page compared with the branded cartridge, while delivering the same result on paper. If you want to work out how much each print really costs you, we explain it in our guide on the real cost of printing, and if you have doubts about the difference in results, take a look at our original vs compatible printed side by side comparison.

Frequently asked questions
Does the compatible Epson 29XL cartridge work with my Expression Home XP-245?
Yes. This cartridge is compatible with the XP-245 and with the entire Expression Home XP-235/247/255/257, XP-332/335/342/345/352/355 and XP-432/435/442/445/452/455 series. Check the exact model on your printer's label before buying.
My printer says the cartridge isn't recognised, what do I do?
This is a common chip-reading fault, not a defect. Switch off the printer, remove the cartridge, clean the gold contacts with a dry cloth and reinsert it until you hear the click. If it continues, take it out for a few seconds and put it back in to force a fresh reading. Accept the non-original ink warning: this is normal and does not affect the warranty.
3-year Startoner consumable warranty
Your Startoner consumable is covered by a three-year legal conformity guarantee. Printer coverage is governed by the manufacturer’s terms and may exclude damage caused by consumables. Using a compatible cartridge does not by itself establish the cause of a fault; keep your documentation and contact us if a problem occurs.
What's the difference between the 29 and the 29XL?
The 29XL is the high-capacity version: it holds more ink than the standard, so it yields more pages and reduces the cost per print. Both are compatible with the same Expression Home XP printers.
