How to print from your phone: Android and iPhone (2026)

To print from your mobile, confirm that the printer and phone can communicate over the same network or via a compatible direct method. On iPhone look for AirPrint; on Android, the print service or manufacturer app. If the device does not appear, check the network and model support first.

You can often print directly from a phone without a computer, but the route varies by app, operating system and printer model. First check whether the printer supports AirPrint, Android printing or a manufacturer app, then confirm how the devices connect. This guide separates local, direct and internet-based remote printing.

What you need before you start

Start with a printer that supports the mobile printing method you plan to use. For ordinary local printing, the phone and printer must be reachable on the same network, or both support a direct connection. Confirm that the printer is ready and has no error before opening the print menu.

• Check your printer’s specifications for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct or a suitable manufacturer app. A USB-only printer will not automatically work with a phone; any cable solution depends on specific hardware and software support.

• Make sure the printer is powered on and ready. A paper jam, empty consumable or other printer error can prevent a job from completing, even if the device remains visible.

Android’s Default Print Service and Apple AirPrint support local printing with compatible printers. Availability and setup depend on the device, app, network and printer. They are not universal remote cloud-print services.

How do you print from an Android phone?

Android’s built-in Default Print Service can print to supported printers without a brand-specific app. A manufacturer app may provide extra setup, scanning or status features, depending on model. Check that the file app offers Print and that the printer appears in the print dialog.

Mopria technology underpins Android’s Default Print Service and supports local printing to certified printers. Mopria also offers a separate Print Service app with additional features. Option 1 · The built-in print service (Mopria)

1. Open Settings → Connected devices → Connection preferences → Printing (the path varies a little by phone brand).
2. Check that an appropriate print service is enabled. On supported Android devices the Default Print Service is built in; the separate Mopria Print Service app is optional and may offer additional features. Menu names vary by Android version.
3. If a compatible printer appears in the print dialog, select it. If not, check the network, printer support and discovery settings.
4. Go to the document, photo or web page you want to print, tap the menu (⋮) or the Share icon and choose Print.
5. Adjust copies, colour, paper size and double-sided, and confirm.

Option 2 · The manufacturer's official app

How do you print from an iPhone or iPad (AirPrint)?

AirPrint is built into iPhone and iPad. With an AirPrint-enabled printer on the same reachable Wi-Fi network, open a printable file, choose Print, select the printer and confirm. If the printer does not appear, check model support and connectivity rather than assuming the phone needs a driver.

Apple describes AirPrint as driverless printing from supported Apple devices to AirPrint-enabled printers. Both devices must be on a suitable local Wi-Fi network for Apple’s documented workflow. 1. Open the file: a PDF, a photo, an email, a Safari page.
2. Tap the Share icon (the square with the upward arrow) or the menu (⋯).
3. Scroll down and tap Print.
4. Tap Printer and select yours from the list.
5. Choose the number of copies and the page range, and tap Print at the top right.

If your printer doesn't appear in the AirPrint list

If the printer does not appear, first check that it supports AirPrint and that the devices share a reachable network. Restart devices and review printer errors if necessary. If the model lacks AirPrint, check whether its manufacturer offers an iPhone-compatible printing app; app availability does not guarantee support for every model.

Printer-brand apps and built-in services offer different functions. AirPrint and Mopria support depend on the exact model; a manufacturer logo alone is not enough. Check the specification for your printer and use the brand app when its setup, scanning or remote feature is needed.

Brother and Epson describe model-dependent direct-connection options for their mobile apps. Check the exact printer’s support documentation before relying on Wi-Fi Direct or Bluetooth. A phone-to-printer test should use the exact printer model and connection method. Verify whether AirPrint, Mopria or the manufacturer app is supported, then print a sample file. No test of selected devices proves that every Wi-Fi printer works without an app.

Printing from your everyday apps

The location of Print varies by application. Some apps expose it through Share or a menu; others do not support direct printing. If Print is missing, open or export the file in an app that supports it, then review the preview before sending.

• Email (Gmail, Outlook, Mail). Open the message and, to print an attachment, open it first. Then: three-dot menu → Print.
• Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive. Open the file inside the app, tap the menu (⋮) and choose Print or Share → Print.
• Photos. Open the image, tap Share → Print. Before confirming, check the paper size (10×15 cm for a photo, A4 for a sheet) so it doesn't come out cropped.
• WhatsApp. Open the received document or image and look for a supported Share or Print option. If the app or viewer does not offer printing, save or export the file and open it in a printable app.
• Web pages. In Chrome (Android) or Safari (iPhone): menu → Print or Share → Print. Handy for tickets, entries and purchase confirmations.
• Word, Excel and PDF. The Microsoft 365 apps and PDF readers have their own Print option inside the file menu.

Can you print from a phone without a router?

Yes, if the particular printer and phone support a direct printing method. Wi-Fi Direct can connect compatible devices without a router; it still uses Wi-Fi radio. Bluetooth or USB requires separate model-specific support and often a manufacturer app. Do not treat all three as interchangeable.

• Wi-Fi Direct. Check that both the printer and phone support it, enable it using the printer’s instructions and follow the connection prompts. Android Default Print Service supports this on suitable Android versions; on iPhone use an Apple-supported or manufacturer-documented method for the exact model.
• Bluetooth. Some portable photo or label printers use Bluetooth with a dedicated app. Check the printer’s supported phone, app and pairing steps. Mopria Print Service does not print through Bluetooth.
• USB-OTG. Do not assume that an Android phone can print to a USB printer through an adapter. Mopria Print Service does not support USB or USB-OTG printing; use a cable only if your printer maker explicitly documents a compatible Android solution.

Wi-Fi Direct connects suitable devices directly without a conventional router. Availability and print flow depend on printer, phone and software. It is not the same as printing over cellular data from a remote location.

What happened to Google Cloud Print?

Google Cloud Print was discontinued in January 2021 and is no longer supported. Google recommends platform printing or a suitable alternative. Its retirement does not remove local printing from Android or ChromeOS. Source: Google

Android Default Print Service and AirPrint handle compatible local print jobs; they do not replace Google Cloud Print’s internet-based remote function. For printing while away, check a current, model-supported remote service such as HP Print Anywhere or another manufacturer’s documented option.

How do I print from my phone when I'm not at home?

Remote printing requires a service supported by the exact printer and correctly enabled on an internet-connected device. HP Print Anywhere can send jobs through the HP app when the model supports it and is set up with an HP account. Do not confuse it with HP ePrint, a separate email-to-printer feature on some older models.

HP documents Print Anywhere as a model-dependent remote service using the HP app and an HP account. The printer needs an active internet connection and must support the feature; if the option is absent, it is not available for that printer. Android versus iPhone: which is easier?

Both platforms can print locally to compatible printers. Ease depends on the particular printer, app and connection. AirPrint and Android Default Print Service each have their own requirements; neither guarantees a fixed number of taps. USB-OTG printing is not a general advantage of Android’s built-in service.

The printer doesn't appear or won't print: quick fixes

If the phone cannot find the printer or a job stays queued, check compatibility, network reachability, power and printer errors. The cause is not always the network. Try these steps in order and follow your printer maker’s troubleshooting instructions if the problem continues.

1. Same reachable network. Confirm that phone and printer can communicate; guest-network isolation can block discovery. A 2.4 GHz/5 GHz difference alone is not necessarily the problem.
2. Restart both. Switch the printer off for 30 seconds and back on; turn the phone's Wi-Fi off and on again.
3. Move closer to the router. A weak signal makes the printer disappear intermittently.
4. Check the printer display or app for paper, consumable or other errors. These may block printing even when the printer is discoverable.
5. Check for manufacturer-recommended firmware updates after verifying the model and release notes; an update is not a guaranteed fix for a connection problem.

The phone prints, but the quality is off

If a print job arrives but the output is pale, streaked or incorrectly coloured, inspect print settings, media and the printer’s maintenance guidance before blaming the phone or a cartridge. When replacing a consumable, check the exact printer and cartridge specifications, declared yield, warranty and current price. A compatible cartridge is not automatically equal in yield or print quality to the original, and a fixed price saving cannot be promised for every product. Do I need an app to print from my phone?

Not always. An iPhone or iPad can use AirPrint without a separate printing app if the exact printer supports AirPrint and both devices share a reachable network. Many Android devices include a Default Print Service for compatible printers. A manufacturer app may be needed for setup, scanning, remote features or a model that lacks the built-in method.

Why can’t my phone find the printer?

First check that the printer supports the method your phone is using and is powered on without an error. For local printing, the devices need a reachable network; guest-network isolation can block discovery. A difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands alone does not prove they are on separate networks. Then check print-service settings and restart both devices.

Can I print from my phone without a router?

Yes, if both devices support a direct method such as Wi-Fi Direct and the printer maker documents the setup. Wi-Fi Direct does not need a router but still uses Wi-Fi. Does printing from a phone use more ink?

Not inherently. Ink or toner use depends mainly on the document, printer, media and print settings rather than which device sends the job. A mobile app may choose different defaults, so compare the same file and settings before drawing conclusions. Draft or grayscale options can change output and consumption, but the effect varies by printer and document.

Can I print from a tablet or Chromebook?

Often, with a supported printer and connection. iPads can use AirPrint, Android tablets can use the Default Print Service, and Chromebooks support local or network printing through ChromeOS. Check the exact printer model and current setup instructions. Google Cloud Print is not required, and remote printing from outside the local network needs a separate supported service.
