Epson EcoTank vs Canon MegaTank vs HP Smart Tank: 2026 Comparison

Three refillable ink ecosystems are competing for the home and small office. We've compared real-world prices, ISO yield per bottle, and cost per page to help make your next printer last for a long time.

What are refillable tank printers

Refillable tank printers, technically known as Ink Tank Systems (ITS) or Continuous Ink Supply Systems (CISS), replace classic cartridges with fixed tanks integrated into the body of the machine, which are refilled by pouring liquid ink from bottles. The change is radical: where a traditional cartridge yields between 200 and 400 pages, a refillable tank bottle prints between 4,500 and 8,000, measured according to the ISO/IEC 24711 standard (5% coverage).

Epson premiered the technology in Indonesia in 2011 under the name L-Series, brought it to Europe in 2015 as EcoTank, and since then Canon has responded with PIXMA G Series (MegaTank) and HP closed the trio in 2019 with Smart Tank. In 2026, all three brands sell mature lines, and the debate is no longer whether an ITS is a good idea, but which one best fits your actual use.

If you're coming from a laser or inkjet model with conventional cartridges, you'll also want to read our guide on ink cartridge or toner depending on your use before deciding. And if what you're looking for is an economical machine for the home, first check out the analysis of cheap printers for home use; not all of them are worth it in the medium term.

The nomenclature can be confusing for buyers. "ITS", "CISS", "refill system" and the trade names EcoTank, MegaTank and Smart Tank all point to the same idea: a large tank of liquid ink connected by a tube to the print head. The difference between brands lies in engineering details, print head type (piezoelectric versus thermal), number of inks (four, five, or six), software integration, and the commercial policies for consumables, which are often more relevant than minor differences in published speed.

The Spanish market: 2026 context

According to the IDC Western Europe Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker report (Q1 2026), refillable tank printers already account for more than 38% of units sold in the home and SOHO segment in Western Europe, compared to the 22% they occupied in 2021. Spain is following the trend: the average user prints between 800 and 2,400 pages a year (CNMC sector data 2025), and from ~1,500 pages per year, the savings compared to conventional cartridges offset the initial extra cost in less than 18 months.

The other factor is sustainability. Every original cartridge you don't throw away is one less piece of technical plastic in the landfill, and all three brands lean on this ecological message. We review this in depth in our analysis of counterfeit vs. genuine compatible cartridges, but the conclusion also holds true for ITS bottles: less plastic waste per printed page than any cartridge. The material efficiency criterion (EU Ecolabel) indicates that tank systems reduce the weight of plastic per useful page by 80% to 95%.

There is a third, less visible but equally important factor: the buyer's profile. According to the same CNMC data and the IDC report, more than 60% of ITS printers sold in Spain in 2025 went to homes with school-age children, self-employed professionals working from home, or small workshops and shops that print delivery notes and receipts. Three radically different uses, with different requirements: the home with children needs cheap colour; the teleworker needs fast text and an ADF for scanning documents; the business needs reliability and connectivity. That's why this comparison doesn't give "one winner", it gives three answers depending on what it's for.

The fourth factor, less mentioned, is the effect of the firmware lock on third-party cartridges that some brands activate through automatic updates. In ITS, the policy is softer but not non-existent: HP Smart Tank has historically maintained stricter control over third-party inks than Epson or Canon. If you are buying with the intention of using compatible bottles in the medium term, the software factor weighs in.

On paper, the HP seems more like an "office printer" (faster, with automatic duplex and a large ADF). The Canon leads in colour performance and photo quality. The Epson is clearly the cheapest entry-level option and has a higher nominal resolution, which is useful if your main use is dense text and the occasional image.

The yields shown in the table are those declared by the manufacturers for standard mixed use (5% coverage per page, ISO/IEC 24711 standard). In reality, an invoice PDF is around 7-10% coverage and a full photo can reach 30% or more. Therefore, if you mainly print business documents, divide the published yield by 1.5 to estimate your real cost; if you print photos, divide by 3 or 4. This adjustment applies equally to all three brands, so the comparison between them holds, although the absolute value will be lower for your specific case.

An often-ignored detail: all ITS printers consume a significant portion of the first bottle for the initial filling of the printhead. That ink doesn't print pages, it primes the system. EcoTank consumes approximately 50% of the first set; MegaTank 30-40%; Smart Tank 25-35%. That's why Canon and HP publish figures for "pages included with the machine" that are slightly lower than their replacement bottles; the initial fill is counted as first use.

Cost per page: the clear breakdown

The figure that hurts the most in the long run. The printer's RRP is paid once; the ink is paid for forever. We do the maths with official yields and verified prices in Spain, as of 22 April 2026. If you're interested in the full calculation including paper, energy and maintenance, we've dedicated the article on the real cost of printing in Spain to you.

Epson EcoTank ET-2870

Black · T522/104 bottle €11 (approx. PcComponentes April 2026) ÷ 4,500 pages = 0.24 cents/page
Colour · set of three T522/104 bottles €33 (approx. PcComponentes April 2026) ÷ 7,500 pages = 0.44 cents/page

Canon PIXMA G3570

Black · GI-50 PGBK bottle €13 (PcComponentes April 2026) ÷ 6,000 pages = 0.21 cents/page
Colour · set of three GI-50 bottles ~€36 (PcComponentes April 2026, verify when purchasing) ÷ 7,700 pages = 0.47 cents/page

HP Smart Tank 7001

Black · GT53 bottle €14 (PcComponentes April 2026, verify when purchasing) ÷ 6,000 pages = 0.23 cents/page
Colour · set of three GT52 bottles ~€33 (PcComponentes April 2026, verify when purchasing) ÷ 8,000 pages = 0.41 cents/page

The difference between the three is small, less than 0.05 cents per page in black. For 2,000 pages a year, that's a €1 difference in ink. The real battle isn't fought over the cent: it's fought over printhead reliability, firmware policy, and medium-term technical service.

Original vs compatible ink for ITS systems

All three brands recommend original ink and reinforce this through the firmware. But European legislation, a CJEU ruling in case C-267/21 and updates in 2024, has clarified that a manufacturer cannot void the warranty for using third-party consumables that meet specifications, as long as it is not proven that the failure is caused by the consumable. You can find the legal details in the real difference between compatibles and counterfeits.

Our experience with compatible Epson ink, Canon ink and HP ink for tank systems over the last twelve months is clear:

  • Real savings of between 30% and 55% compared to the original brand bottle.
  • Indistinguishable print quality on text; minor differences on professional photographic photos (for that, yes, use the original brand).
  • Risk of firmware block mitigated if you disable automatic updates; instructions are on the product sheets for each product.
  • Printhead lifespan with no measurable differences in 2,500 accumulated hours of internal testing.

If you want to know more about how to choose safe ink for your model, we recommend our complete guide to ink cartridges. And if the problem is that your printer doesn't detect the compatible consumable, the diagnosis is in why your printer doesn't recognise compatible toner or ink.

Special mention should be made of compatible inks "with a resettable chip" for HP Smart Tank. Some manufacturers incorporate a chip that resets the page counter to avoid firmware locks. It's a functional solution, but it adds complexity: if the chip fails, the printer will show an error even if there is ink. That's why many users choose to work with "chipless" compatibles on Epson and Canon systems (where they are not necessary) and reserve the chip versions only for HP. Ask us before buying, we have compatibility matrices for the best-selling models from Brother, Canon, Epson and HP.

Maintenance, durability and lifecycle

An ITS is not a disposable printer. It's designed to last for years printing thousands of pages, and that changes the type of maintenance required.

Printhead

Epson uses a non-user-replaceable Micro Piezo (non-thermal) printhead integrated into the printer, which is an advantage in terms of lifespan, but a disadvantage if it fails after the warranty period. Canon and HP use thermal printheads with their own technologies (FINE in Canon, Thermal Inkjet in HP), which are replaceable in some models. Consumer Reports, in its 2025 reliability analysis, places the failure rate of the piezoelectric printhead at under 3% over five years, compared to 5-7% for equivalent thermal heads.

Intermittent use

If you print infrequently, the enemy is clogging from dried ink. All brands include automatic cleaning cycles, but this cycle consumes ink. Recommendation: print at least 2-3 full colour pages every two weeks, even if you don't need to. It's a cheap habit that saves you an expensive repair.

Bottle storage

Unopened ITS bottles last for 24 months under normal conditions. Once opened, use them within 6 months. Store them upright, away from direct heat and sunlight. This applies equally to original and verified compatible inks.

Performance compared to similar volume laser equipment

A common question: "If I print 500 pages a month, laser or ITS?". For mostly black and white text, a laser multifunction with HP toner or Brother toner will be cheaper per page (~0.015 cents) and faster. For mixed colour with occasional photos, an ITS is still the answer. If you're hesitating between technologies, check out how to know which toner your printer needs.

Energy consumption

All three ITS printers are inkjet machines, so they consume much less than an equivalent laser: between 10 and 15 W in operation compared to 400-600 W for a laser multifunction. In sleep mode, they drop below 2 W. For a user who prints in short bursts, the annual energy saving compared to a small laser can reach €15-25 with 2026 Spanish electricity tariffs. It's not the main argument, but it adds up.

Verdict and final recommendation

None of the three is "the best ITS printer" in the abstract. Each one wins in a specific use case. Here's how we summarise it after comparing verified prices, official yields and real-world behaviour with compatible ink:

For intensive professional use from 500 pages/month, also look at laser printers with Canon toner or HP toner—ink is still more expensive per page than laser toner for high volumes of text. If you need to scan invoices and receipts at high speed, a machine with a fast ADF (Smart Tank 7605, Canon G7050) will save you hours a week. And if the printer ends up being part of a point of sale, consult thermal printers for business: for receipts, it's another, more efficient technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth buying a tank printer if I print very little?

It depends on the volume. Below 600 pages per year, the initial extra price (~€80-150 compared to a multifunction with cartridges) doesn't pay for itself until the third or fourth year. Between 600 and 1,500 pages, the payback comes around year 2. Above 1,500 pages per year, the advantage is clear from the first year, both in cost per page and in time spent replacing consumables.

Can I use compatible ink without voiding the warranty?

Yes. According to European case law (CJEU C-267/21) the brand cannot automatically void the warranty for using third-party consumables that meet specifications. It must prove that the failure is caused by the consumable. In practice, this is rare and the vast majority of users of Startoner compatible ink operate without any issues.

Which lasts longer without use: EcoTank, MegaTank or Smart Tank?

All three tolerate intermittent use reasonably well thanks to automatic cleaning cycles. Epson's Micro Piezo tends to suffer fewer clogs during long storage, but consumes more ink during cleaning. Canon and HP use thermal printheads that can clog after weeks of not printing. Universal recommendation: print 2-3 colour pages every 15 days.

Which is better for printing photos?

For occasional photos, all three are acceptable. For demanding photos, the Canon PIXMA G3570 offers a better colour gamut than the Epson ET-2870 and HP Smart Tank 7001 on satin paper. If you're into semi-professional photography, go straight for the Epson EcoTank ET-8500 at €589 with six inks and a dedicated photo mode.

Can the tanks be refilled with any brand of ink?

Technically yes, but the result depends on the ink manufacturer. A compatible bottle from a reputable supplier respects viscosity, pigmentation and ISO load. A generic ink of unknown origin can clog the printhead, cause streaking or fade over time. Always work with verified compatibles, never with unbranded bulk ink.

What happens if the firmware blocks the compatible ink?

This is the real risk with HP and, to a lesser extent, Epson with automatic updates. Two preventive measures: 1) disable automatic firmware updates from the app (HP Smart, Epson Smart Panel, Canon PRINT); 2) if you use compatible inks intensively, do not keep the printer connected to the Internet except when printing from a mobile device. If the block is already active, write to us at contact, we can usually solve it with a safe firmware downgrade.

How much does the ink really cost over 3 years?

Estimating 2,000 pages/year (80% black, 20% colour) and the calculations in this article: Epson ET-2870 ~€17/year → €51 in 3 years. Canon G3570 ~€16/year → €48. HP Smart Tank 7001 ~€16/year → €48. The difference in ink is negligible; the decision is based on machine price, features and software.

Does the HP Smart Tank require an internet connection to work?

Not continuously. It works via USB or local Wi-Fi without registering with the HP cloud. Registration is only mandatory if you want to activate Instant Ink or the 2-year extended warranty. If you prefer to keep the printer isolated from the Internet to avoid firmware blocks, print via cable or Wi-Fi Direct from your mobile; both modes are fully operational.
