What toner does the HP Color LaserJet Pro M254dw need, plus 5 compatible models

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

Looking for toner for your HP Color LaserJet Pro M254 or MFP M281? The consumable you need is the HP 203A (CF540A) in its black version. Our compatible toner yields 1,400 ISO pages with the same print quality as the original, and costs a fraction of the price. See the compatible HP 203A toner.

Is it compatible with your printer?

This whole family of HP colour printers fits the same cartridge of the 203A series. If you have any of these 6 models, the CF540A is your black toner:

  • HP Color LaserJet Pro M254dw
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro M254nw
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M280nw
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281cdw
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdn
  • HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

The letters at the end of the model indicate the equipment of each machine, but they don't change the consumable. The n means a network connection (Ethernet), the w adds Wi-Fi, the d is duplex printing (automatic double-sided) and the MFP prefix indicates it's multifunction (it prints, scans and copies). It doesn't matter which variant you have: they all use the same reference. Not sure of your exact model? Use our printer finder to confirm it in seconds.

The consumable you need and what it yields

The compatible HP 203A (CF540A) toner in black yields 1,400 pages measured according to the ISO/IEC 19798 standard, the international standard for toner yield in colour printers. It includes a chip, so the printer recognises it and shows the levels normally, just like with a branded cartridge.

This reference is also equivalent to the Canon 045, so if your machine belongs to that compatible family, the same toner works for you. Remember that in colour printers you need the four colours (black, cyan, magenta and yellow) to print in full colour; this cartridge covers the black part, the colour that is used up most in text documents.

How much printing costs you

The advantage of a compatible is simple: the same yield for much less money. You get the same 1,400 ISO pages the original cartridge offers, but paying only a fraction of the price. In a colour printer, where you end up buying several cartridges, that saving multiplies with every replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Does the compatible HP 203A toner work in my Color LaserJet Pro printer?

Yes. The CF540A is the official black reference of the 203A series and is the cartridge fitted at the factory by the M254dw, M254nw, MFP M280nw, MFP M281cdw, MFP M281fdn and MFP M281fdw models. As it carries a chip, the printer detects it without problems. If you have doubts about your specific model, verify it in our printer finder.

How many pages does this toner print?

It yields 1,400 pages according to the ISO/IEC 19798 standard, the same standard used to measure the original cartridge. The real yield depends on the ink coverage per page: the denser what you print, the sooner it runs out.

Does using a compatible toner void my printer's warranty?

No. Using compatible consumables does not void your machine's warranty. Article 120 of RDL 1/2007 (the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users) protects your right to choose third-party consumables without losing the manufacturer's warranty. You can check all the details on our warranty page.

How long does shipping take?

We ship within 24-48 hours across mainland Spain, and shipping is free from €50 per order. This way you have your toner ready to keep printing in a few days.
