What toner does the HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401a need, plus 7 compatible models

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

Looking for toner for your HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401 or M425? The cartridge you need is the HP CF280X (also valid as CE505X). Our compatible version yields 6,500 pages with the same print quality as the original, and costs a fraction of the price. See the compatible CF280X / CE505X toner.

Is it compatible with your printer?

The CF280X / CE505X is the high-capacity toner fitted by all the machines in the LaserJet Pro 400 family. It doesn't matter whether you have the basic version, the network one or the multifunction: the consumable is the same. The letters at the end of the model only indicate the printer's equipment, they don't change the cartridge. In general: n = network connection (ethernet), d = automatic double-sided duplex printing, dn = network + duplex, dw = wireless network (Wi-Fi) + duplex, dne = network/duplex variant, and MFP = multifunction machine (it prints, copies and scans). If you have any of these models, this is your toner:

  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401a
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401d
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dn
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dne
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401dw
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 MFP M425dn
  • HP LaserJet Pro 400 MFP M425dw

Not sure of the exact model of your machine? Look at the front label of the printer or use our printer-model finder to confirm it in seconds.

The consumable you need and what it yields

For this whole family there's only one toner, and it's high-capacity (the "X" of CF280X and CE505X means precisely that). Our compatible HP CF280X / CE505X toner yields 6,500 pages measured according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard, the international standard for monochrome toner with a 5% coverage per page. It's the same method HP uses to measure its original cartridges, so the figure is directly comparable.

Being a high-capacity version, it's the ideal option if you print quite a lot: fewer cartridge changes and a lower cost per page. When the toner runs out, you just replace it; these machines don't carry a separate drum, so you don't have to worry about additional parts. You'll receive the cartridge ready to install in a couple of minutes.

How much printing costs you

Here is the big difference. An original high-capacity toner for the M401/M425 series has a high price, while the compatible gives you the same 6,500 ISO pages for a portion of the cost. The printed result is identical: same dense blacks, same sharp text and same reliability, but your cost per page falls notably.

Frequently asked questions

Does the compatible CF280X work in my HP M401 or M425 without problems?

Yes. The compatible CF280X / CE505X toner is designed to work exactly like the original across the whole LaserJet Pro 400 M401 series (a, d, dn, dne, dw, n) and in the M425dn and M425dw multifunction machines. It installs the same and the printer recognises it normally. If you're in doubt about your model, confirm it with the printer finder.

How many pages does this toner print?

It yields 6,500 pages according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard (at 5% coverage). It's a high-capacity cartridge, so it lasts quite a bit longer than a standard toner and reduces the number of replacements. Your real yield will depend on how much text or graphics each page includes.

Does using a compatible toner void my printer's warranty?

No. Using compatible consumables does not void your machine's warranty. Spanish law (article 120 of RDL 1/2007, the consolidated text of the General Law for the Defence of Consumers and Users) protects this right: the manufacturer cannot force you to use only its cartridges. You can check all the details on our warranty page.

How long does shipping take?

We ship within 24-48h to mainland Spain and shipping is free from €50. This way you have your toner ready practically the next day, without standing idle waiting for the replacement.
