Compatible HP CF257A (57A) drum: installation, reset and savings guide | Star Toner

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

The compatible HP CF257A (57A) drum is the imaging unit you need when your printer starts showing lines, shadows or repeated marks every few centimetres. It is not the toner: it is the component that transfers the toner onto the paper and which, with use, wears out independently. At Star Toner you can get it for €119.99 with a declared yield of 80,000 pages.

What the CF257A is and which printers it fits

The CF257A is the drum unit of the HP 57A system. It is replaced separately from the toner cartridge, which lets you greatly extend the printer's service life without changing the whole consumable every time. This compatible drum is suitable exactly for these models:

  • HP LaserJet MFP M436dn
  • HP LaserJet MFP M436n
  • HP LaserJet MFP M436nda

If your machine is one of these three, this is the correct drum. Before buying, check the code printed on the installed unit or in the consumables menu on the panel.

How to install it and what to do if "the cartridge is not recognised"

Replacement is straightforward: switch off the printer, open the front cover, remove the old drum module by pulling on the guide, take off the seals and the protective sheet from the new CF257A and slide it in until it clicks into place. Close the cover and switch on.

If, after installing it, a drum not recognised or invalid consumable warning appears, try the following in order:

  • Switch the printer off completely, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on to force a re-read of the chip.
  • Reseat the unit: sometimes the chip contact does not line up properly.
  • Confirm the on-screen warning; in many cases it is informational and printing continues as normal.

These warnings are usually due to firmware updates that tighten consumable control. We explain the mechanism and how to avoid it in our guide on how HP firmware blocks cartridges.

Yield and savings versus the original

With an 80,000-page yield, this drum is designed for medium- and high-volume environments, where the cost per page is what really makes the difference. A compatible consumable like this significantly reduces the cost per page compared with the branded unit, while maintaining equivalent print quality on office documents.

Why buy it at Star Toner

Our consumables are manufactured under quality controls and come with a legal guarantee in accordance with Spanish regulations: using a compatible does not void your printer's warranty. You can check your rights in the guide to the legal guarantee for compatible cartridges.

Add the compatible HP CF257A drum to your basket and receive it with fast delivery. And if you also need to renew colour toner for other machines, we have the entire compatible range ready to ship.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CF257A drum the same as the 57A toner?

No. The CF257A is the drum unit, the component that transfers the toner onto the paper, and it is replaced separately from the toner cartridge. Change it when lines, shadows or repeated defects appear on the page.

Will it work with my printer?

This drum is compatible exactly with the HP LaserJet MFP M436dn, M436n and M436nda models. Check the model on the machine's label or on the panel before buying.

The printer says the drum is not recognised, what do I do?

Switch the printer off completely, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on so it re-reads the chip. Reseat the unit if the warning persists. It is usually related to the firmware and in many cases the message is informational and lets you keep printing.

Does using a compatible drum void my HP printer's warranty?

No. Spanish regulations protect the use of compatible consumables and the manufacturer cannot void the machine's warranty because of it. See our legal guarantee guide for more detail.
