How to install it and what to do if "the cartridge is not recognised"

Installation is straightforward: switch off the printer, open the front cover and pull out the drum + toner assembly. Push the green locking lever, separate the used toner from the drum and click the new cartridge into place until you hear it lock. Refit the complete assembly and close the cover.

On these models, the toner and the drum are separate parts. The drum has a far longer service life and is only replaced when the corresponding warning appears; for that you have the compatible DR-2000 / DR-350 drum.

These Brother series don't use an electronic chip: the toner counter is managed mechanically via an optical window and a sensor inside the machine. That's why, if after fitting a new cartridge the printer still shows "replace toner" or "toner empty", it can almost always be resolved with a manual reset. The usual procedure is: with the front cover open, enter the toner reset menu (on machines with a display) or press the button combination indicated in your model's manual, select standard or high-capacity toner and confirm. Always check the exact keys for your machine, as they vary between the HL, DCP and MFC series.
