Compatible Brother TN230 / TN210 colour toner: installation, reset and page yield
Actualizado 18 julio 2026Share
If you have a Brother 3040/9010-series colour laser printer and want to replace the toner without paying the price of the original, the compatible Brother TN230 / TN210 colour toner is the direct option. Here we explain which machines it fits, how to install it, what to do if the printer says it "does not recognise the cartridge" and how much you can save.
What it is and which printers it fits
It is a compatible (non-OEM) colour toner cartridge that replaces the original Brother TN230 and TN210 references, with an approximate yield of 2,200 pages at 5% coverage. It is designed for these Brother models:
- Brother DCP-9010CN
- Brother HL-3040CN and HL-3045CN
- Brother HL-3070CW and HL-3075CW
- Brother MFC-9010CN, MFC-9120CN and MFC-9320CW
In these machines the toner and the drum (DR-2000 / DR-350) are separate parts: the toner runs out with each colour, while the drum lasts much longer and is only replaced when the printer indicates it.
How to install it and what to do if it "does not recognise the cartridge"
Installation is identical to that of the original:
- Open the front cover and remove the drum + toner assembly for the depleted colour.
- Separate the old toner from the drum by pushing the green locking lever.
- Remove the seal and protective tab from the new toner and shake it gently from side to side to distribute the powder.
- Fit the new toner into the drum until you hear a click and refit the assembly in the printer.
In this Brother series, the toner level warning depends on a sensor window in the drum chassis, not on an electronic chip in the cartridge. If the printer marks the toner as empty after the change, it is almost always resolved by cleaning that window with a dry cloth. If the machine still does not recognise the new cartridge, most of these models allow a manual reset from the panel (a key sequence when opening the front cover); check the manual for your specific model for the exact combination, as it varies between HL, DCP and MFC.
Page yield and savings versus the original
This cartridge offers the same 2,200 pages of estimated yield as the original TN230/TN210, with print quality comparable for office colour documents. The difference lies in the cost: buying compatible notably reduces your cost per page without changing your printing habits. If you want to see the real breakdown, we explain it in the real cost of printing, and we compare both types page by page in original vs compatible.
Buying compatible is entirely legal and does not void your printer's warranty; we detail this in the legal warranty on compatible cartridges in Spain.

Frequently asked questions
Does the compatible TN230/TN210 toner have a chip or does it need resetting?
In this Brother series (HL-3040CN, DCP-9010CN, MFC-9120CN, etc.) the toner level is measured with an optical drum sensor, not with a cartridge chip. If the printer keeps showing empty after the change, clean the sensor window and, if necessary, apply the manual reset from the panel according to your model's manual.
Does this cartridge fit my Brother HL-3070CW or MFC-9320CW?
Yes. It is compatible with Brother DCP-9010CN, HL-3040CN, HL-3045CN, HL-3070CW, HL-3075CW, MFC-9010CN, MFC-9120CN and MFC-9320CW. Check that your printer appears in that list before buying.
How many pages does it print and at what quality?
It yields approximately 2,200 pages at 5% coverage per colour, a yield equivalent to that of the original TN230/TN210, with quality suitable for office colour documents.
Do I also need to change the drum when fitting this toner?
Not necessarily. The toner and the DR-2000/DR-350 drum are independent parts; the drum lasts many more pages and is only replaced when the printer indicates it.
