Compatible HP 149A W1490 toner: installation, reset and savings

Updated

The HP 149A toner (reference W1490) is the black consumable for HP's latest generation of monochrome laser printers. In this guide we explain which machines the compatible version works with, how to install it, what to do if your printer says it doesn't recognise the cartridge, and what real savings you can expect versus the original.

What it is and which printers it works with

Star Toner's compatible version is an exact replacement for the original in these models: Where a product page states a page yield, check its declared test protocol: ISO/IEC 19752.

  • HP LaserJet 4002dn, 4002dne, 4002dw and 4002dwe
  • HP LaserJet MFP 4102dw and 4102dwe
  • HP LaserJet MFP 4102fdn, 4102fdne, 4102fdw and 4102fdwe

If your machine appears in this list, the cartridge fits both physically and electronically. You can see all the details on the compatible HP 149A W1490 toner page.

How to install it and what to do if it "doesn't recognise the cartridge"

Before fitting it, gently rock it from side to side to distribute the toner evenly, then remove the protective seal. Insert it until it stops and close the cover.

These machines use a chip to identify the consumable. If, after installation, you see a warning that the cartridge is not recognised, not compatible, or an incorrect low-level alert, try these steps:

  • Switch the printer off, wait a minute and switch it back on to force a fresh reading of the chip.
  • Remove the cartridge, carefully clean the chip's gold contacts with a dry cloth and refit it.
  • If the warning persists, it is usually an advisory message that can be dismissed by pressing OK or Continue: printing carries on as normal.

Many of these warnings come from HP's firmware updates. We explain how to manage this in our article on when HP firmware blocks cartridges.

Yield and savings versus the original

The result on text documents and monochrome graphics is a solid, even black.

If you want to work out how much you really spend on each sheet, it helps to read the real cost of printing. And if you have any doubts about the difference in quality, we ran the test in original vs compatible, printed side by side.
