Compatible HP CF289A (89A) toner: a guide for the LaserJet Enterprise M507 and M528

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

If your printer uses the HP 89A cartridge and you are looking for a reliable replacement without paying the price of the original, this compatible CF289A toner is designed for exactly that. Here we explain which machines it fits, how to install it, what to do if the "cartridge not recognised" warning appears and what real savings you can expect.

What the CF289A toner is and which printers it fits

The HP CF289A (89A) is a black toner cartridge with a capacity of 5,000 pages according to the ISO yield standard. This compatible model includes a chip, is manufactured under an ISO 9001 quality system and works as a direct equivalent of the original, although it is not a product made by HP.

It is compatible exactly with these machines:

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M507dn
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M507dng
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M507n
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M507x
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M528dn
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M528f
  • HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M528z

Before buying, check the reference on your current cartridge or in your printer's supplies menu: it should read 89A or CF289A. If your machine prints high volumes, there are higher-yield variants in this family, but for normal use the 89A covers most offices.

How to install it and what to do if the "cartridge is not recognised"

Installation is identical to that of the original: open the front cover, remove the used cartridge, take the new one out of its packaging, shake it gently from side to side to distribute the toner, remove the sealing tape and fit it until it clicks into place. Close the cover and the printer will detect it.

If a warning appears saying "cartridge not recognised", "non-original" or "a used supply has been installed", it does not mean the toner is faulty: it is usually HP's detection system. Try these steps:

  • Switch off the printer, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on so it re-reads the chip.
  • Remove and reinsert the cartridge, making sure the chip is properly aligned with the contacts.
  • When the panel offers to continue despite the warning, accept: these are informational messages that do not prevent printing.

Bear in mind that HP's firmware updates can tighten this block. We explain this in detail in how HP firmware blocks cartridges, with recommendations to avoid surprises.

Page yield and savings compared with the original

With a declared yield of 5,000 pages under ISO methodology, the density and text sharpness are on a par with the branded cartridge in everyday office use. The key difference lies in the cost per page: a compatible toner noticeably reduces the spend per printed document without changing your workflow.
