How do I know it's time to change the toner?

These M15 and M28 printers warn you before they leave you stranded. The typical signs:

• A 'Low toner' warning appears on the panel or in the HP software.
• Prints come out light or faded, especially in solid fill areas.
• Vertical white streaks or lines appear and won't go away.
• Smudges or a greyish background show up on the page.

An old trick: take out the cartridge and rock it gently from side to side to redistribute the toner that's left. It buys you a few more pages, but if the problem persists, it's time to replace it.

The chip, the firmware and HP Dynamic Security (no nonsense)

Let's be honest, because it's the number-one question. On many of its printers, HP includes a system called Dynamic Security that can reject non-original cartridges. Installation and what to do if it isn't recognised

Changing the toner on an M15/M28 takes about a minute: open the front cover, pull out the old cartridge, remove the orange seal and the sealing tab from the new one, and slot it in until it clicks. Close the cover and you're done.
