How to install it and what to do if it "won't recognise the cartridge"

Installation is simple. Switch off the printer, open the front cover and remove the spent colour cartridge, pulling it out carefully. Before fitting the new one, gently rock it from side to side a few times to distribute the toner evenly and remove the protective seals. Push it in until you hear the click, close the cover and switch on.

If a message such as "cartridge not recognised" or "not compatible" appears, it can almost always be resolved like this: switch the machine off and on to force a fresh read of the chip, and check that you've removed all the seals and that the cartridge is properly seated. These Xpress models don't require a manual chip reset: every compatible CLT-404S already includes its own new chip, so you simply need to let the printer read it again. If the message persists, wipe the gold contacts on the cartridge and in the housing with a dry cloth.
