Compatible Samsung MLT-D1042S toner: installation, chip reset and savings

The MLT-D1042S is one of the most common black toner cartridges across the range of Samsung home laser printers. What it is and which printers it fits

The MLT-D1042S is a monochrome (black) toner cartridge manufactured to the ISO 9001 quality standard. It is the correct reference for Samsung's entry-level laser and multifunction range. Specifically, it is compatible with these models:

• Samsung ML-1660, ML-1665, ML-1670 and ML-1675
• Samsung ML-1865 and ML-1865W
• Samsung SCX-3200, SCX-3205 and SCX-3205W
• Samsung SCX-3217 and SCX-3218

How to install it and what to do if it "doesn't recognise the cartridge"

Installation is straightforward. Switch off the printer, open the front cover and remove the used cartridge. Unpack the new one and gently rock it from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly; then remove the seal or protective tab. Insert the cartridge until it clicks into place, close the cover and switch the machine on.

The ML-1660 / SCX-3200 range uses a fairly lenient counting system, so recognition problems are rare. Even so, if after the change you see a message such as "cartridge not recognised" or "invalid toner", try these steps:

• Remove the cartridge, wipe the metal contacts or the chip with a dry cloth and refit it so it is seated properly.
• Switch off the printer, wait a minute and switch it back on so it re-reads the cartridge.
• If a persistent low-level warning appears, it is usually just informative: you can carry on printing normally until the toner runs out.

Yield and savings compared with the original

This compatible cartridge declares the same 1,500 pages as Samsung's original reference, measured to the same ISO/IEC 19752 standard. On normal office text and home documents, the black density and sharpness are equivalent to the original, at a noticeably lower cost per page.
