Compatible HP CF256X (56X) toner: installation and compatibility guide

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

If you run an HP LaserJet MFP M436 in the office or in a high-volume printing environment, the original consumable ends up weighing on the budget. The compatible HP CF256X (56X) toner delivers the same stated yield at a far lower cost per page. Here is everything you need to know before and after installing it.

What it is and which printers it fits

The CF256X is the high-yield version of the 56 cartridge, a monochrome (black) toner with a stated yield of 13,700 pages according to the ISO standard. Our compatible version is manufactured to the ISO 9001 standard and is a direct replacement for the original: same format, same chip and same installation.

It is compatible exactly with these models:

  • HP LaserJet MFP M436dn
  • HP LaserJet MFP M436n
  • HP LaserJet MFP M436nda

If your machine is not on this list, do not install it: first check the exact cartridge code printed on the box of your current consumable.

How to install it and what to do if it "doesn't recognise the cartridge"

Installation is identical to the original: switch off the printer, open the front cover, remove the used cartridge, unpack the new one, shake it gently from side to side to distribute the toner, remove the sealing strip and slot it in until you hear the click. Close the cover and switch on.

If a warning of the type "cartridge not recognised" or "non-original cartridge" appears, it does not mean the toner is faulty. It is usually down to how the chip is read. Try these steps:

  • Switch off the printer, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on to force a fresh reading of the chip.
  • Remove and reinstall the cartridge, making sure it makes proper contact.
  • Accept the "non-HP cartridge" warning: it is informational and printing continues as normal.

Bear in mind that HP firmware updates can tighten these blocks. We explain this in detail in how HP firmware blocks cartridges so you know when it is best to postpone an update.

Yield and savings versus the original

With the same 13,700 pages of stated yield as the original CF256X, the savings are concentrated in the purchase price: you pay considerably less per cartridge while maintaining the same printing volume. On a departmental machine like the M436, which gets through toner frequently, that difference multiplies over the course of the year.

We do not invent price comparisons with the original, but we have put both to the test side by side. You can see the results in original vs compatible printed side by side and work out your own spend with the real cost of printing guide.

Why buy it from Star Toner

We sell compatible consumables, not originals, and we say so plainly. This toner comes with:

  • Manufacturing to the ISO 9001 quality standard and yield control.
  • Legal warranty like any product sold in Spain: using a compatible does not void your printer's warranty. We set it out in the legal warranty on compatible cartridges.
  • Shipping from Spain and direct support if you have any doubts about compatibility.

The compatible HP CF256X 56X toner is available for €18.99. If you also manage colour machines, take a look at our compatible HP CF450A and compatible HP 508A CF360A toners.
