Reset Brother DR-2400/DR-2300 drum unit (drum LED)

You've replaced your Brother drum unit and the drum LED keeps flashing (or the display insists on "Replace Drum"). It's not a fault with the replacement part: on Brother laser printers the drum counter lives inside the printer, not in the part. That's why it doesn't reset itself. You have to reset it by hand, and it takes half a minute.

Why does the drum LED keep flashing after I've replaced it?

The printer doesn't "weigh" the drum: it keeps an internal page counter. When it reaches around 12,000 prints, it triggers the drum warning. That counter has no way of knowing you've fitted a new one, so it keeps flashing until you reset it. It's a manual reset, the same with an original drum as with a compatible one.

First things first: the Brother drum has no chip that resets itself

It's worth stating clearly, because with the toner the sensor sometimes does detect the new cartridge on its own. With the drum in this Brother family, it doesn't: the part is mechanical and has no chip. The count is held in the machine. It makes no difference what brand the drum is: you always have to reset the counter yourself.

How to change the drum unit step by step

Fitting the drum in a Brother laser printer is straightforward. With the printer switched off:

  1. Switch off the printer and open the front cover.
  2. Take out the complete drum + toner assembly: it comes out in one piece by pulling on the tab.
  3. Push down the green locking lever and separate the toner from the old drum.
  4. Fit that same toner into the new drum until you hear it click.
  5. Put the assembly back into the printer, pushing it all the way in.
  6. Close the front cover and switch on.

How to reset the drum counter (manual reset)

This is the part that switches off the LED. The standard method in this Brother family is as follows, although — to be honest — the exact sequence changes from model to model:

  • Models with a display and keypad (many MFCs): you go into the machine's menu, to the drum information or reset option, and confirm.
  • LED models or those with few buttons (several HLs and DCPs): with the printer switched on, open the front cover — with the drum inside — and hold down the OK button (or the start button, depending on the model) until the display or the LEDs confirm the reset; then close the cover.

We won't give you a "universal" button combination because there isn't one: it changes between an HL-L2350DW and an MFC-L2710DW. Are you sure it's the drum and not the toner?

Before buying, confirm which part the machine is asking for. They're different warnings:

  • The toner warning ("Toner Low" or "Replace Toner") appears every 3,000-4,500 pages: it runs out quickly. If your Brother keeps asking for toner after you've changed it, it's almost always continue mode; we explain it in Brother TN-2510 toner reset: keep printing.
  • The drum warning (drum LED on or flashing, or "Replace Drum") appears much later, at around 12,000 pages, and often flashes first as an early warning. If you also see repeated streaks or marks every few centimetres, it's the drum.
