How to clean printheads step-by-step (HP, Epson, Canon, Brother)
Share
Summary: Cleaning printheads solves most quality problems in inkjet printers: streaks, missing colors, pale printing. The first resort is automatic cleaning from the printer's software or its app; if that's not enough, there is a manual cleaning of the cartridge or the printhead. This guide covers both methods, the steps by brand (HP, Epson, Canon, Brother), and errors to avoid to not damage the equipment.
The printhead is the part that expels ink through hundreds of micro-injectors. When the printer spends time without being used, the ink dries inside those injectors and clogs them. Cleaning them restores the flow. It is the most profitable domestic repair that exists: it costs zero euros and solves what many people "solve" by buying a new printer.
When should you clean the printheads?
When any of these symptoms appear in an inkjet printer:
- White horizontal stripes crossing the document.
- A color that comes out weak or doesn't appear (text without black, photos without magenta...).
- Incorrect or mixed colors.
- General pale printing despite having ink.
Important: this applies only to inkjet printers. Laser printers do not have a printhead; if yours is laser and it produces stripes, consult our guide my printer prints with stripes.
Step 1 · Print a nozzle test
Before cleaning anything, print a nozzle check pattern (or "nozzle test"). It is a pattern with blocks of each color that reveals exactly which injectors are failing. You find it in the printer's maintenance menu or in its app. If all blocks come out complete, the problem is not the printhead: check ink levels or settings.
Step 2 · Automatic cleaning from the software
It is the main method and the one you should always try first. The printer purges ink under pressure to break the clog.
From Windows
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select your printer → Printing preferences or Printing options.
- Look for the Maintenance or Service tab and choose Printhead cleaning.
From Mac
- Open System Settings → Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer → Options & supplies → Utility → Open printer utility.
- Choose Printhead cleaning.
From mobile
The manufacturer's app (HP Smart, Epson Smart Panel, Canon PRINT, Brother iPrint&Scan) includes printhead maintenance in its settings menu. It is the most convenient way if you print from the phone.
After cleaning, print the nozzle test again. If it improves but there are gaps, repeat the cleaning one or two more times, no more. If after three cycles there is no improvement, turn off the printer and let it rest for 6 hours: the time softens the dried ink and the next cleaning usually expels the clog.
Cleaning by brand: nuances worth knowing
| Brand | Where is the cleaning | Note |
|---|---|---|
| HP | HP Smart → Printer settings → Tools; or printer panel → Settings → Tools | In many HP models the printhead is integrated into the cartridge: changing the cartridge changes the printhead. |
| Epson | Epson Smart Panel or Epson Printer Utility → Printhead cleaning | The printhead is fixed, part of the printer. It also offers a "Deep cleaning" for difficult cases, which consumes quite a bit of ink. |
| Canon | Canon IJ Printer Utility or panel → Maintenance → Cleaning / Deep cleaning | It distinguishes between normal and deep cleaning. Use deep only if normal fails twice. |
| Brother | Printer panel → Ink / Maintenance → Cleaning; or Brother iPrint&Scan | Allows cleaning only black, only color, or everything. Clean only the color that is failing to save ink. |
Step 3 · Manual cleaning (when automatic is not enough)
If after the automatic cycles and the 6-hour rest the injector remains clogged, manual cleaning remains. There are two cases:
If the printhead is on the cartridge (typical in HP and Canon)
- Remove the cartridge.
- Moisten a lint-free cloth or a cotton swab with distilled warm water (not tap water) or isopropyl alcohol.
- Wipe the cloth gently over the gold injector area until it drags clean ink. Do not rub with force.
- Rest the cartridge printhead on a damp cloth for 2-3 minutes to soften the clog.
- Dry carefully, reinstall, and print the test again.
If the printhead is fixed (typical in Epson and Brother)
The printhead is not easily extracted. The safest thing is to use the software's "deep cleaning". Physical interventions on fixed printheads carry a real risk of damage and it is advisable to leave them to a technical service.
Do not use tap water (limescale clogs more), nor rough kitchen paper (scratches the injectors), nor alcohol on printheads designed only for water. Never turn off the printer in the middle of a cleaning cycle: it can be rendered useless. And do not chain ten cleanings in a row: they empty the cartridge without solving anything.
How to prevent printheads from clogging again
- Print regularly. One color page per week keeps the ink fluid. Inactivity is the number one cause of dry printheads.
- Turn off with the printer button, not by cutting the power: this way the printhead returns to its sealed resting position.
- Use quality ink. Certified inks maintain stable viscosity; very cheap uncertified inks dry out and sediment sooner.
- Do not leave the printer without cartridges or with empty cartridges installed for weeks.
If the cleaning does not restore the quality and the cartridge is recent, it may be a defective cartridge: check the 3-year legal warranty. And when it's time to restock, you will find certified compatible ink and toner for HP, Canon, Epson and Brother in our catalog.
Frequently asked questions
How do I clean my printer's printheads?
The fastest way is automatic cleaning: in Windows, go to Printers & scanners → Preferences → Maintenance → Printhead cleaning; on Mac, in Printers & scanners → Utility; or from the manufacturer's app on your mobile. Print a nozzle test afterwards to check the result.
How many times in a row can I clean the printhead?
A maximum of three cycles in a row. Each cleaning consumes ink. If it doesn't improve, turn off the printer and let it rest for 6 hours before trying again; that rest softens dried ink and is usually more effective than insisting.
Can I clean the printhead with alcohol?
Only on printheads integrated into the cartridge and with isopropyl alcohol, applied with a wrung-out cotton swab. For fixed printheads (common in Epson and Brother) it is preferable to use the software's deep cleaning. Never use tap water: limescale worsens the obstruction.
Automatic cleaning doesn't work, what do I do?
After three unsuccessful cycles, turn off the printer for 6 hours and retry. If it remains the same, try manual cartridge cleaning with a lint-free cloth and distilled warm water. If the injector does not recover, the printhead or the cartridge may be permanently damaged.
Do laser printers have a printhead to clean?
No. Laser printers do not use a printhead or injectors: they fix toner with a drum and a fuser. If a laser prints with stripes, the cause lies in the toner, the drum, or the rollers, not in a printhead.
How often should I clean the printheads?
Only when there is a quality problem. It is not periodic maintenance: cleaning without need only wastes ink. The best prevention is printing a color page per week so the ink doesn't dry.
Does turning off the printer in the middle of cleaning break it?
Yes, it can leave it unusable. The cleaning cycle moves the printhead and purges ink; interrupting it by cutting the power can block the mechanism. Always wait for the cycle to finish completely.
