Is it compatible with your printer?

The HP 142A (and its XL version, the 142XL) is the only toner fitted by the printers of the LaserJet M211 and M236 series. It doesn't matter which variant you have: they all use exactly the same cartridge. If your machine is any of these, this is your toner:

• HP LaserJet M211d
• HP LaserJet M211dw
• HP LaserJet MFP M236dw
• HP LaserJet MFP M236sdn
• HP LaserJet MFP M236sdw

The letters of the name only indicate connectivity and functions, they don't change the consumable: d is duplex printing (automatic double-sided), w is Wi-Fi, n is an Ethernet network and MFP means multifunction (it prints, copies and scans). The M211s are print-only printers, while the M236s (MFP) add a copier and scanner; the variants with more letters, such as sdn or sdw, only add connectivity and paper-handling options. The consumable you need and what it yields

You have two options of the same cartridge, depending on what you print:

• Compatible HP 142A (W1420A) toner: yields 950 pages measured according to the ISO/IEC 19752 standard, the yield standard for monochrome toner. It's the standard option, ideal for normal use.
• Compatible HP 142XL (W1420XL) toner: yields 2,200 ISO pages. It's the high-yield version (XL): more pages per cartridge and a lower cost per page, designed for those who print a lot.

Both are "all-in-one" cartridges that already incorporate the drum, so you don't need to buy a separate drum: when the toner runs out, you change the complete cartridge and that's it. Which to choose? If you print occasionally, the 142A is more than enough. No. According to article 120 of RDL 1/2007, using compatible consumables does not void the legal warranty of your machine.
