How to Install Canon 057/067/051 Toner and What to Do If It Isn't Detected

Changed the toner and your Canon i-SENSYS is still warning "Replace toner"? Don't worry: it's almost never a faulty cartridge. The printer doesn't measure the actual toner, it counts pages with an internal counter. If that counter isn't reset, it keeps thinking the toner is empty. With a compatible cartridge that has a chip, it usually sorts itself out.

Why does my Canon keep saying "Replace toner"?

Canon laser printers don't weigh the toner or check how much powder is left inside. They have a chip in the cartridge that tells the printer how many pages it has printed and when it should warn you. When you fit a new cartridge, that chip has to reset the count to zero. If the chip is old or the printer doesn't read it, you'll see the same warning over and over.

First things first: the reset chip already comes in the cartridge

The good news: our compatible Canon toners already include a new chip from the factory. On most Canon i-SENSYS printers, that means the counter resets on its own as soon as you install the cartridge and close the cover. There's no need to touch any menu or press odd key combinations: you fit the compatible Canon 057 Toner (or whichever one your machine uses) and off you print.

So, before you go looking for reset tricks, try the simple thing: seat the cartridge properly, close the cover fully and send a page. Most of the time the warning disappears without you doing anything else.

How do you install the Canon toner step by step?

It's a two-minute swap. On the mono Canon i-SENSYS printers (057, 051, 047) the toner is a separate part from the drum; on the colour ones (067) the cartridges go in a drawer. The general process:

  1. Leave the printer switched on and open the front or side cover indicated in the manual, where the cartridge sits.
  2. Take out the used toner. On the mono printers it slides straight out; the drum, which is a separate long-life part, stays inside.
  3. Take the new toner out of its bag and rock it gently from side to side to spread the powder.
  4. Remove the tab or protective seal if it has one.
  5. Slide the cartridge into its rail until you hear a "click". On the colour printers, place it in its colour slot until it seats.
  6. Close the cover firmly and print a test page.

What if it still shows "Replace toner" or "Change toner"?

If, after installing it properly, the printer keeps insisting, it's almost always not a stuck counter but the non-original cartridge warning that many Canon printers carry. It's a check by the brand, not a fault in the cartridge. Depending on your machine:

  • Canon i-SENSYS with touchscreen (MF443/445/449, MF651/655/657...): the panel itself shows a message you can confirm or continue past. The exact path (accepting the warning or adjusting the check in the menus) varies from one model to another.
  • Models with buttons or LED (LBP161/162, LBP223/226...): you normally confirm it from the menu or by following the screen indicator, with no hidden combinations.

When is the problem the drum and not the toner?

Sometimes the warning isn't about the toner: it's about the drum. On the Canon 051, for example, the drum is a separate part that lasts much longer (around 23,000 pages). Suspect it if you see marks or dots that repeat every few centimetres, fixed vertical lines or a greyish background, even though the toner is new.

If that's your case, replace just that part with the compatible Canon CRG-051 Drum (23,000 pages, €13.99) and keep the toner you already have. It works out much cheaper than replacing the whole assembly.
