You cancelled Instant Ink and the printer stopped: how to fix it
Cancelling an ink subscription switches off the cartridges, not the printer. Here is exactly what happens, why the error message misleads you, and the five minute fix that gets you printing again.
What actually happens when you cancel
Your printer is not broken and it has not been locked. The cartridges are the part that gets switched off. HP Instant Ink cartridges are not sold to you. They stay HP property for as long as the plan runs, and they are coded to print only while an active subscription is attached to that printer. When the plan ends, the printer checks in with HP and the cartridges are switched off, whatever ink is still inside them.
HP says this in its own words on its support pages: you can only print with Instant Ink cartridges while you are enrolled in an Instant Ink plan. The behaviour is by design, not a fault, which is why the usual troubleshooting steps do nothing.
That distinction matters, because it tells you what the fix is. You are not repairing a printer. You are replacing the cartridges with ones you own.
The detail that traps most people: one cartridge is enough
Leaving a single Instant Ink cartridge in the printer can keep the whole machine from printing. This is the most common reason people report that the fix did not work. They swap the black, leave three colour cartridges in place, and the printer still refuses.
Take every Instant Ink cartridge out. Look at each one. Instant Ink cartridges are marked as such on the label and usually arrived in a plain HP envelope rather than retail packaging. If a cartridge came through the subscription, it needs to come out, even if it is nearly full.
How to get printing again, step by step
- Open the cartridge door and remove every Instant Ink cartridge. All of them, colour and black.
- Fit retail cartridges that you own. After cancelling Instant Ink, HP says to use standard or XL HP cartridges; use a compatible cartridge only when it is specifically validated for your model and the printer is not HP+. HP+ printers require Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
- Close the door and let the printer run its alignment. A cartridge swap on an inkjet normally triggers a short priming and alignment cycle. Let it finish.
- If an error persists, power cycle properly. Turn the printer off at its own button, unplug it from the wall for sixty seconds, plug it back in and switch it on. This clears the cached cartridge state that sometimes survives a swap.
- Ignore prompts to re-enrol. The printer and the HP software will offer to restart the subscription. Declining does not affect the cartridges you just fitted.
If you are unsure which cartridge number your printer takes, it is printed inside the cartridge door and on the old cartridge itself. Our guides for the common families cover installation and yields: HP 364XL, HP 953XL and HP 950XL.
Why the error messages are so confusing
The printer rarely says the true reason. Instead of a plain message about the ended subscription, people see cartridge problem, cartridge missing, incompatible cartridge, or a supply error with an exclamation mark. Those are the same messages the printer shows for a genuinely faulty cartridge, which sends people down a troubleshooting path that cannot work.
If the timing lines up with a cancelled plan, treat the message as a subscription message. Cleaning contacts, reseating cartridges and running the printhead routine will not bring a deactivated cartridge back.
What it costs to print after you leave
Leaving the plan is the moment the running cost changes, so it is worth doing the arithmetic once. A subscription bills a flat monthly fee whether or not you print, and unused pages roll over only to a capped limit. Buying cartridges bills you only when you print, and the cost per page depends entirely on which cartridge you fit.
The comparison that matters is cost per printed page over a year, not the shelf price of a cartridge. A high yield compatible cartridge usually beats both a standard retail cartridge and a light subscription tier for anyone printing irregularly. If you print heavily and predictably, the maths gets closer.

Does fitting a compatible cartridge now affect your warranty
No, not by the act of fitting one. In the EU your statutory rights sit with the seller and cannot be removed by a manufacturer policy. A manufacturer that wants to reject a specific claim has to show that the specific third party cartridge caused the specific fault, rather than pointing at the cartridge in general.
That is the legal principle. In day to day terms it means a compatible cartridge does not void anything on its own, and a printer that fails for an unrelated reason is still covered.
We set out the detail, including how the legal guarantee differs from a commercial guarantee, in the statutory guarantee and compatible cartridges.
Frequently asked questions
Will my printer work at all after I cancel Instant Ink?
Yes. The printer keeps working normally once you fit cartridges you own. Cancelling deactivates the subscription cartridges, not the hardware. There is no permanent lock on the machine and no code you need from HP.
Can I keep using the Instant Ink cartridges I still have?
No. They stop working when the plan ends, even when full, because they remain HP property and are coded to the active subscription. HP provides prepaid envelopes to return them for recycling.
I replaced the black cartridge and it still will not print. Why?
Almost certainly because at least one Instant Ink cartridge is still installed. A single subscription cartridge left in the carriage is enough to hold up the whole printer. Remove every one of them, then power cycle.
Do I have to buy HP cartridges, or can I fit compatible ones?
After cancelling regular Instant Ink, replace the subscription cartridges with standard or XL HP cartridges. A compatible cartridge is not guaranteed for every model, so check the exact compatibility. If you activated HP+, the printer requires Original HP Ink for its lifetime.
Is there a fee for cancelling?
HP Instant Ink plans can be cancelled from your account without an exit fee. Note that this is not true of every printer subscription: some plans that include the printer hardware carry a minimum term and an early termination charge, so check the plan you are actually on.
Cartridges you own, that keep working
No subscription, no remote switch off, no cartridge that expires when a plan does.
