HP 508A CF360A compatible black toner: installation guide, chip reset and savings

Actualizado 18 julio 2026

The HP 508A CF360A compatible toner is a black toner cartridge with an ISO yield of 6,000 pages and manufacturing under the ISO 9001 standard. It is designed for the user who prints colour volume and does not want to pay the premium of the original consumable, while maintaining the same print quality on documents.

What it is and which printers it fits

The CF360A is the black reference of the HP 508A family. It is a standard-yield cartridge (the high-yield variant would be the 508X). This toner is compatible with the following machines:

  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M552dn
  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise M553dn, M553n and M553x
  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577c, M577dn and M577f
  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M577z

If your machine is one of these, this cartridge fits without adapters. Remember that this is the colour black; the three colours (cyan, magenta, yellow) use different references from the same series.

How to install it and what to do if "the cartridge is not recognised"

Installation is identical to that of an original cartridge: switch off the printer if you prefer, open the front door, remove the depleted black cartridge by pulling it out, take the new toner out of its packaging, shake it gently horizontally to distribute the powder, remove the sealing tape and place it on its rail until it stops.

If after installing it a message of the type "cartridge not recognised", "non-HP" or "incompatible chip" appears, it is usually not a fault with the toner:

  • Switch off the printer, wait a minute and switch it back on to force the chip to be read.
  • Remove and re-insert the cartridge, making sure the chip is clean and properly seated.
  • Many of these messages are an informational warning: you can continue printing by accepting the message.

The usual cause of these blocks is HP firmware updates. We explain this in detail in how HP firmware blocks cartridges, with recommendations for avoiding them.

Yield and savings against the original

With 6,000 ISO pages, this compatible offers the same declared duty cycle as the standard cartridge in the series, so the replacement frequency does not change. The difference is in the cost per page: by removing the brand premium of the original consumable, the cost per printed document drops noticeably.

If you want to calculate your own real cost rather than relying on generic figures, you have the methodology in the real cost of printing. And if you have doubts about the output quality, in original vs compatible side by side we compare both printouts without any retouching.

Frequently asked questions

Does the HP 508A CF360A compatible toner work with my HP Color LaserJet M553?

Yes. This black cartridge is compatible with the M552dn, M553dn/n/x series and the M577c/dn/f and Flow M577z multifunction models. It is the standard black reference of the 508A family.

My printer says the cartridge is not original — is that a problem?

Usually not. That message is generated by the HP firmware when it detects a non-OEM chip. Switch the printer off and on, re-insert the cartridge and, if the message persists, it is normally enough to accept it to carry on printing.

How many pages does the CF360A print?

It yields 6,000 pages according to the ISO standard, the same declared capacity as the standard cartridge in the series. It is the normal-yield version; the 508X offers greater capacity.

Does using this compatible void my HP printer's warranty?

No. Spanish regulations protect the use of compatible consumables: the manufacturer cannot void the machine's warranty for using them, unless it is proven that the cartridge caused the damage.
