Compatible HP 83A CF283A toner: compatibility, installation and savings

The compatible HP 83A (CF283A) toner is a monochrome cartridge designed for the multifunction and laser printers in the LaserJet Pro series. How to install it and what to do if it "doesn't recognise the cartridge"

Installation is identical to that of an original cartridge: switch off the printer, open the front cover, remove the used toner, take off the seals and the protective tab of the new cartridge, shake it gently from side to side to distribute the toner and slot it in until you hear the click.

If after installing it a cartridge not recognised or "non-original" warning appears, it is almost never a fault of the toner: it is usually HP's own panel. Try these steps:

• Switch off the printer, wait about 30 seconds and switch it back on so it restarts the chip reading.
• Remove and reinsert the cartridge, making sure the chip is properly seated on its contact.
• If the message persists, on most of these models you can carry on printing by pressing OK or Continue on the panel.
