Compatible HP 435A / 436A toner: installation guide, chip reset and savings

Updated

The compatible HP 435A / 436A toner is a black powder-toner consumable for HP LaserJet Pro laser printers in the entry-level range.

What it is and which printers it fits

It is a monochrome (black) cartridge that combines the toner and the drum in a single unit, just like the original. It is compatible with the following models:

  • HP LaserJet Pro M1132
  • HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP
  • HP LaserJet Pro M1217nfw MFP
  • HP LaserJet Pro P1102
  • HP LaserJet Pro P1102w
  • HP LaserJet Pro P1109
  • HP LaserJet Pro P1109w

If your device doesn't appear on this list, don't force the installation: first check the exact code of the cartridge you currently have fitted, usually printed on the cartridge label itself or in the printer manual.

How to install it and what to do if it "doesn't recognise the cartridge"

Installation is identical to the original: switch off the printer, open the front cover, remove the used cartridge by pulling it out gently, take the new one out of its packaging, shake it horizontally a few times to distribute the toner evenly, remove the plastic seal and fit it until it clicks into place. Close the cover and switch on.

These models (P1102, M1132, etc.) do not use an electronic chip like higher-end devices, so the "cartridge not recognised" error is uncommon. If a warning does appear, try these steps:

  • Confirm that you have completely removed the orange seal and the protective covers.
  • Reinstall the cartridge, making sure it seats fully on both sides.
  • Switch off the printer, wait 30 seconds and switch it back on to force a fresh read.

If your device does show block messages due to a software update, check our guide on how HP firmware blocks cartridges before updating.

Yield and savings versus the original

This cartridge is calibrated to deliver page coverage equivalent to that of the original on everyday office documents. The savings versus the branded consumable are significant, since compatible cartridges sit consistently below the OEM price while keeping the same laser technology. To understand what each page really costs you, we recommend reading our analysis of the real cost of printing, and if you have doubts about the quality, we ran a comparison of original vs compatible printing side by side.

To verify print quality after installing it, you can use a print test page and check the sharpness of the black.

Why buy it at Star Toner

Your Startoner consumable is covered by a three-year legal conformity guarantee. Printer coverage is governed by the manufacturer’s terms and may exclude damage caused by consumables. Using a compatible cartridge does not by itself establish the cause of a fault; keep your documentation and contact us if a problem occurs.

If you also print in colour with other HP devices, we have compatible consumables for your range, such as the HP 508A CF360A colour toner or the high-yield HP CF450A colour toner.

Frequently asked questions

Does the compatible HP 435A / 436A toner work with my HP LaserJet Pro P1102?

Yes. It is compatible with the HP LaserJet Pro P1102 and P1102w, as well as the M1132, M1212nf, M1217nfw, P1109 and P1109w models. Check your device's cartridge code before buying.

What do I do if the printer doesn't recognise the cartridge?

These models have no chip, so the error is rare. Remove the seal thoroughly, reinstall the cartridge fully on both sides and switch the printer off for 30 seconds before switching it on to force a fresh read.

How many pages does this cartridge print?

Browse the available products and check compatibility, declared yield and price on each product page.

3-year Startoner consumable warranty

No. The legal warranty in Spain protects the use of compatible consumables, and the manufacturer cannot void the device's warranty simply for using them, unless the cartridge itself causes demonstrable damage.
