Compatible Canon CRG-049 drum: installation, chip reset and savings
Actualizado 18 julio 2026Share
The compatible Canon CRG-049 drum is the imaging unit required by several mono laser printers in Canon's i-SENSYS range. It's worth telling it apart from the toner: the toner supplies the powder that fuses onto the paper, whereas the drum is the photoconductor cylinder that picks up that powder and transfers it to the sheet. When the drum wears out you'll see vertical lines, repeated grey bands or blurred patches, even when the toner is full.
What it is and which printers it fits
This drum has an approximate yield of 12,000 pages, measured under normal usage conditions; the actual figure depends on coverage and the type of jobs. As it's a separate unit from the toner, you don't need to replace it with every refill: it lasts several toner cycles before it needs replacing.
It is compatible with exactly these models:
- Canon i-SENSYS LBP110 series
- Canon i-SENSYS LBP112
- Canon i-SENSYS LBP113w
- Canon i-SENSYS MF110 series
- Canon i-SENSYS MF112
- Canon i-SENSYS MF113w
If your machine is on this list, the compatible Canon CRG-049 drum fits without adapters or additional parts.
How to install it and what to do if the cartridge isn't recognised
Replacement is straightforward: switch off the printer, open the front cover and take out the toner assembly. Separate the old drum from the toner cartridge, fit the new drum, refit the toner and close the cover. Always remove the plastic protectors and avoid touching the surface of the roller with your fingers.
On printers compatible with the CRG-049 the drum doesn't carry an electronic chip that blocks its use, so warnings such as "cartridge not recognised" normally don't appear when you change it. If after installation you see a warning message or the level doesn't update, try these steps: switch the printer off and on to force a re-read, check that the drum is properly seated and that you've removed all the seals, and wipe the metal contacts with a dry cloth. Low-level messages are usually informational and you can carry on printing as normal.
Yield and savings compared with the original
A compatible drum offers the same function as the original — transferring the toner crisply — at a considerably lower cost. The price difference with the branded unit is substantial, and on a component that lasts thousands of pages that saving feeds directly into your real cost per page. If you want to understand how the two behave in print quality, we have a comparison where we print them side by side.
To check the result after the change, you can use our print test page and verify there are no bands or shadows left.

Frequently asked questions
Is the CRG-049 drum the same as the toner?
No. The CRG-049 drum is the imaging unit (the photoconductor cylinder) that transfers the toner to the paper, whereas the toner is the printing powder. They are different parts: the drum lasts several toner cycles, roughly 12,000 pages, before it needs changing.
Will my printer give a "cartridge not recognised" error when I install this compatible drum?
On the LBP110/112/113w and MF110/112/113w models the drum has no chip that blocks its use, so that error normally doesn't appear. If you do see a warning, switch the printer off and on, check that the drum is properly seated and free of seals, and clean the contacts.
Which printers does the compatible Canon CRG-049 drum fit?
It is compatible with the Canon i-SENSYS LBP110 series, LBP112, LBP113w, MF110 series, MF112 and MF113w. If your machine is on this list, it fits without adapters.
